Again, it all comes down to approach. Is this going to be a quick-shot, "Clash" style movie, where the only ambition is to blow stuff up real good? Or are they going to step back, take a good, hard look at the character, and bring him to life in our world? Needless to say I'm hoping for the latter. That doesn't mean it'll be good (see SR) but at least there'll be some heart to it.

You're probably right, though I am still hoping that this is the kind of picture that the Director cares about so much that he "guides" (if not flat out writes) the script.

I don't know. It seems like selling a script to the director was how it was done in the 1980's/1990's – "Hey Jan De Bont, want to direct this Godzilla script?" Nowadays it seems that often the director "develops" the project from the outset, i.e. Nolan-BB, Singer-X-Men, SR...

That in and of itself may show us the direction this picture takes. Is it a script that a director films? Or is it a project that a director develops?

Wait, wait, wait...Totally and utterly wrong or just totally?

And which part is wrong, because there are three statements there...

Was the way I described the filmmaking process not how it happened in the 1980's/1990's?

Was Jan De Bont not approached to direct Rossio/Elliot's preexisting script?

Or did Nolan and Singer not develop their respective projects from the outset?

Needing a little more insight here.

Regarding Batman Begins, just to be clear, Nolan was not given the director's nod until AFTER *David Goyer* had worked up a spec script. You inferred this in your post, by saying WB regained interest in the franchise after seeing Goyer's and Nolan's vision. What REALLY happened is Goyer put his vision down and was shopping it for his own purposes, and got WB's interest, but it wasn't fully there (because his first script sucked balls), and eventually Nolan was brought into help flesh it out, before he was assigned director. Again, THE SCRIPT CAME FIRST.

So the entire Nolan / Batman thing is not quite correct. Nolan was not given the project prior to a script being written. The subsequent rewrites by the Nolan brothers were done during and after the selection of Nolan as the director, with much of Goyer's original material being removed.

And to suggest that you would prefer the director WRITE the script is scary. Directors are not writers, and writers are not directors. There are precious few people who can do both, at least well.

No, it really looks like Legendary pulled the PR trigger on this Godzilla film a bit too early (look at the T-shirt design fiasco), and in all likelihood they are shopping spec scripts right now (and I'd bet Goyer is working on one... no more comment on that). So I would have to believe any notion of this really happening in 2012 is unlikely.

Not that it matters, since we are all going to die in 2012 anyway, so only the surviving cockroaches and mutant underground human/mole hybrids will see it.

Based on the short time I was a film major and the few indie shorts I've worked on, I agree with MFW, walshiam, and Destroysall. While there have indeed been cases of directors signing onto a project before a script, its rather rare - it really only seems more common because the Studios love to hype up the auteur angle (especially when the film is a major success), even when that's not the case.

Rewrite his origin.....
A wealthy man on a business trip stops into a dusty little curio shop in an Asian district of (pick your big city) and eyes an unusual little lizard in a really old and elegant looking container. When he peers closer the little guy spits blue fire at him.

He tells the shopkeeper, a wise man from Okinawa that he would like to purchase it for his son. The keeper warns him it is not for sale, for if the creature were ever released, terrible things would befall the planet.

So the man flashes a huge wad of cash and greed consumes the shopkeeper...he instructs that the lizard is named Gojira, and legend has it if let out and freed he would become the scourge of the world....he needs no food but must be kept in the cage he is currently it. It holds a spell that confines him.

Dad takes it home, kid gets it, opens the cage and we have......

GREMLINS!!! Sorry, but if not for Gremlins, that might have been a cool idea....

I am with MFW though, I think there is probably a number of both high and low profile directors looking at this and are looking at their schedules to see if they can make it work. Be patient, there is plenty of time.
You must show no mercy, nor have any belief whatsoever in how others judge you... for your greatness will silence them all!
