Regarding Batman Begins, just to be clear, Nolan was not given the director's nod until AFTER *David Goyer* had worked up a spec script. You inferred this in your post, by saying WB regained interest in the franchise after seeing Goyer's and Nolan's vision. What REALLY happened is Goyer put his vision down and was shopping it for his own purposes, and got WB's interest, but it wasn't fully there (because his first script sucked balls), and eventually Nolan was brought into help flesh it out, before he was assigned director. Again, THE SCRIPT CAME FIRST.
So the entire Nolan / Batman thing is not quite correct. Nolan was not given the project prior to a script being written. The subsequent rewrites by the Nolan brothers were done during and after the selection of Nolan as the director, with much of Goyer's original material being removed.
And to suggest that you would prefer the director WRITE the script is scary. Directors are not writers, and writers are not directors. There are precious few people who can do both, at least well.
No, it really looks like Legendary pulled the PR trigger on this Godzilla film a bit too early (look at the T-shirt design fiasco), and in all likelihood they are shopping spec scripts right now (and I'd bet Goyer is working on one... no more comment on that). So I would have to believe any notion of this really happening in 2012 is unlikely.
Not that it matters, since we are all going to die in 2012 anyway, so only the surviving cockroaches and mutant underground human/mole hybrids will see it.
