Born to Win - wierd film. well acted and all, but I just don't think I'm into this kind of film, at the same time, I am...it's hard to explain. I think the fact that it's well-acted draws me to it and the characters cement everything but it has that kind of a lack of a story that I find a bit frustrating. Though I know this came first, it really reminded me of Edmond with William H. Macy in some ways...
Bedlam - a somewhat "meh" film from Val Lewton and Boris Karloff, though by all rights, I've been told that this is one of Lewton's lesser films and I still found it very enjoyable
The Box - ... (takes breath) ... (opens mouth to speak) ... (searches for right words) ... about as bad as I thought it was gonna be but not entirely in the places I thought it would be. The acting was bad, which was to be expected, but it was HORRENDOUS, which made it that much less enjoyable. The dialogue was worse than I thought. HOWEVER, I expected a cookie-cutter story and this was really anything but. I went on an emotional roller-coaster with this one, starting off thinking "how bad could it be?" then thinking "even worse than I thought possible" then "hey, this story is actually kinda neat, i think this is getting good" then "what was the POINT of everything else???" you've got a 20 minute X-files Episode here that gets padded out with a bunch of action whose SOLE point is to flesh out the motivations of ONE character. There's no plot advancement, and the ending just had me sitting back and thinking what the possible POINT was to everything else that happened to the two main characters?? BTW, the advertising on this film was AWFUL. They made it out to be a fairly stock thriller and it's actually got a LOT of sci-fi to the story
Chinatown - BRA-freaking-VO...I wish they still made movies like this...
EDIT: I'm also in the middle of "The Collector" and so far, I won't comment on the story or anything, but it's pissing me off to watch. I'm trying to watch it while my wife sleeps and I can't hear ANY of the dialogue without turning it up a bit, but as soon as I do there's some OVERLY LOUD sound effect or something...it's not SCARY, it's pissing me off and keeping my wife awake, i'm probably gonna quit on this and pick it up again tomorrow
