Well to steer this thread back on course after another one of Kain's random bouts of insanity:
I just caught the midnight screening of Terminator Salvation. Me and my friends were bored and decided to check it out and... I liked it! Maybe it was my lowered expectations, but I really had a good time with this. It beats the heck out of T3 by a mile. It has its problems, but the hyperbolic negative reviews by the likes of Harry "I give anything a good review as long as I get free merch and a set visit" Knowles have be baffled. There is nothing in this movie that warrants such scathing reviews... granted there is a lot to dislike here, but at its worst, I found the movie to just be kinda generic.
Is the plot thin? Yes? Does it have a few holes? Yes, but nothing too glaring. Are there cliches? Yes. Are there cheesy moments? Yes, but this is a Terminator movie, and even the most serious one (the first film) has its fair share of cheese. Do characters often have nothing to do until the next big action scene? Yes. But despite these faults, I thought it was good fun. Its everything that movies like Transformers and Wolverine wanted to be.
The biggest problem I had with it was that it was obviously cut down. I know there were things cut to get it its PG-13 rating, but there was a lot (especially in the first half) that just goes by so fast, while the second half is more focused. It seemed kinda like a rough cut. It just felt REALLY lopsided. The first half rushes through plot point after plot point, while the second serves the plot a bit better. Heck, Christian Bale is barely in it until the last 50 minutes or so. You can tell they had more in the script, but it was cut in the editing room, much to the film's expense. If the movie gave itself a bit more time to breathe, it would have been MUCH better, so hopefully we'll get some kind of Unrated Director's Cut on DVD.
All in all, I'm glad I didn't listen to all the negative reviews. Is it as good as the first 2? Not at all. But its much better than T3 and it was a really fun movie for me. Seeing the great and underrated Michael Ironside on the big screen again was also a treat. Seeing "In Loving Memory of Stan Winston" as the first credit also brought a big smile to my face.
So the verdict: Its a pretty generic action flick, but its a great time. Don't expect something earth shattering like T1 and T2.
SPOILERS-(highlight) and the Arnold comeback was also sweet, even though it used a lot of motion capture and CGI "de-aging".
