Here's something for discussion: what would your reaction be if, once the movie comes out, it's not about a giant monster at all? What if it's, say, aliens? Better yet, what if it's done in such a way that you not only never actually see the "enemy", but rather only its effects, and the filmmakers leave it vague or open what the true nature of the "attack" was?

I have no problem one way or the other as long as it's effective as the trailer, but if it did turn out that way, I can imagine the screams of genre fans calling for JJ's head on a pike! OTOH, it would allow everyone to continue to argue whether it was Godzilla, Cthulhu, Voltron or a Giant Lion. Everybody wins!

Well, this much has pretty much been confirmed from what little has leaked out from the studio and people who have witnessed location filming. I'll lighten the text as not be too spoilery

From what (very little) has leaked so far, the whole movie is from the perspective of a camcorder that is found in the aftermath of a giant creature attack. The film supposedly open with the video camera being found by clean-up workers, in a scene very reminiscent of 9-11.

That's all that has been confirmed at this point, but it is highly likely that you are right in that the monster will not be seen much, if at all. If it does, it will be short, shakey-cam, long distance shots. But it is almost 100% certain to be a monster.
