Boy this movie is getting a lot of press lately.

I'm in agreeance with Mr. Gay on this one. Looks nice, not much of a story, way too repetitive (once you've seen one Persian impaled on a spear, you've them all), very "Lord of the Rings"-ish("OH GODZILLA! WHAT TERRIBLE LANGUAGE!" it even had Faromir in it), basically functions as a video game, ie Spartans beat large group of Persians, and then kill big boss monster. Then a bigger group of Persians comes, and then a more powerful boss monster comes, etc, etc, etc. Pretty, not much of a movie,[/i]

^Sounds like someone has an obvious political chip on their shoulder. Again alot of movie reviews/comments are more like Rorshaks for the reviewer.
As for Xerxes being someone "who freed people from cruel dictators", what history are you reading? Which dictators, can you name some, as thats news to me!? Xerxes was a ruthless ruler of Egypt and Babyl and tried to conquer all of the Greek city states, hardly freeing anyone, he was a conqueror. As much as 300(which was a comic book kiddies) embellished with 7 foot androgynous depictions, or hunchback traitors, the events themselves were suprisingly accurate. Try reading Herodotus-its all in there. Course Herodotus was a little before the current trend of movie critics and company turning everything into a fake "right wing vs. left wing" argument.

All in all I'd say any Miller fan should appreciate the irony that his properties are now hot commodities for films(considering what happened w/Robocop). Heck one of my all time fave movies was Batman Begins-and that owed a HUGE amount to millers Year one.
