Beautiful cinematography, as has been mentioned. The special effects were perhaps some of the most realistic I've seen in the kaiju genre, with the exception of a few CGI moments. The film absolutely drew you in.
For the first time in years, not only was I not in the least annoyed by main character children, but actually enjoyed them. What a feat to accomplish!
Zedus looked menacing and spectacular. Gamera was fittingly youthful, but still imposing. The Gyaos looked fantastic, as did the aging and tired older Gamera.
Indeed, if anything took me slightly by surprise, yet left me extremely satisfied...was the "theme" of sorts. I found the haunting vocal chants to feel very different, yet incredibly perfect for the tone of the film.
All in all, Ultraman the Next and Gamera the Brave have raised the bar to new heights (speaking of which, when the **** are we getting some DVDs of these two?!). Let's see if Toho steps up to the plate.
