I own both figures and I've never personally feared breaking either's wings while handling them.
I have one of each that I keep in their boxes at all times, and while I have a second Battra on display, I won't be putting another Mothra on display in the open, at least for more than a few moments to take a picture or so, but they both always seemed pretty sturdy to me, anyway. Bandai may not have made very exciting wings, but in my opinion they did very well securing them inside the figures.
The only thing I've noticed on one Battra I own and a few others of each that I've seen online or at G-Fest is that sometimes you can get wings that are quite crooked, and because the vinyl is harder and made to fit around the plugs of the wings, you can't easily just push them into alignment.
