comprehensive list

Postby brad2654 » Thu May 18, 2006 1:50 pm

I've read through this entire thread, but I'm still not sure which of the Madman DVDs are must-buys, and which I should avoid.

Could someone please post a comprehensive list of the Madman DVDs, specifically comparing them to the US releases. Or if such a list already exists, please tell me where to find it. Thanks!

bad letterboxing -- overcropped

Postby brad2654 » Fri May 19, 2006 3:09 am

Thank you very much for the list, GFan. It will be very useful when making my purchasing decisions. But I'd like to address some specific problems I've noticed...

The letterboxing on several of the Columbia / Tri-Star DVDs is noticeably overcropped. This is very obvious in "Son of G" at 5:40 (note the text on the bottom of the sign) and at 19:25 (note the label on the altitude guage). Also in "G vs Sea Monster" at 5:40 (note how the two men's heads are chopped off). I have compared these DVDs to PAL videotapes by Polygram / 4 Front Video, and in both cases, the PAL tapes show significantly more picture at the top and bottom (though less on the sides). I couldn't figure out how to add photos to this board, but you can view frame grabs of these scenes here (the Tri-Star DVD is on top, and the PAL tape below): http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/brad2654@ ... /my_photos

I'm very curious how the Madman DVDs look at these scenes. Has anyone done a direct side-by-side comparison of the letterboxing?

Here are frame grabs of the scenes I described previously, in which the US DVDs have been overcropped.
The PAL VHS versions show significantly more on top and bottom, though less on the sides.
Could someone please tell me how these scenes look on the Madmad DVDs. Thank you.

I tried to post some frame grabs to this board, but I'm obviously doing something wrong, because I can't get them to show up. But you can see them here:

I was thinking about ordering MadMan's Transformers the Movie DVD in addition to their Godzilla ones.
Has anyone watched the R4 Transformers disk yet?
Signatures are stupid and annoying.
