Good question... it will depend on how successful MAX is for the network. Only time will tell.

I Just finished the flick only a few minutes ago. It's excellent. Very enjoyable. Although at the start it didn't seem as grand or epic as I'd heard from folks on the various boards, it was still a good flick and it really picked up once the One got to do his thing in Shinjuku. And when U-man took to the skies - Incredible!
I was very impressed by the One himself- he comes across as a real villainous monster, rather than just some galactic animal. No mere force of nature is he - the One just loves to smash stuff and kill people for the fun of it. A real ne'er-do-well. :)
Right, I'm off to check out some of those dvd extras...

do you guys know if they going to be releasing this one in the US soon?

I saw some clips off Tokyo Monsters, and it makes me a little hungry in seeing this movie badly.

Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but I got the DVD and soundtrack through my letterbox, so I thought I'd share my thoughts on it.

It's fantastic.

The actors are great, Tetsuya Bessho makes a very likeable hero as Maki, while Kyoko Toyama has something of a sexy creepiness as Sara, who I thought did well as the scientist who's very cold towards Maki becoming The Next and crumbling under the pressure she faces having to kill her fiancee, Udo.

It's always good to see actors having fun as villains, and Kenya Osumi is no different for what little screentime he has as Udo. I even felt sorry for the character of Tsumugu.

I liked the Guyver-esque look of Ultraman, and the flight scenes, even though the CGI was a little obvious (the final battle is set in broad daylight, however, so credit for the CGI team for having the stones to go with it) were awesome and gives you a good sense of speed.

The One is one cool-looking critter. Though I must admit I like the design of Monster X in Godzilla: Final Wars, I kept wondering what it would have been like had The One emerged from that X-Seijin meteorite instead of MX. His first two forms were a touch goofy-looking in my opinion, but the evil of the creature is prevalent throughout all of its forms, including the neat "Akuma" final form.

One tiny nitpicking question, though: if Maki/Ultraman is "The Next", would it not make more sense gramatically to have The One be called "The First"?

Takahiro Matsumoto's music is another good aspect of the movie. The themes for Next's battle with the The One are very good, and the theme for Maki, even though it's a bit Top Gun-ish, carries the lead's nobleness across. There are also some good minor themes throughout the movie too, such as The One's aerial attack on Tokyo.

All in all, Ultraman: The Next impressed me a lot, and I'd recommend it to anyone curious.

Yeah, it's a rocking movie! I'm pretty sure that the same team is returning for the 2006 film (Moebius?) and even though it's said to have a more light-hearted attitude, I'm sure we'll get a great piece! :D

I remember hearing a while back that there would be a sequel to Ultraman: The Next called Ultraman 2: Requiem. Whatever happened to that?

Recently, BBC 4 ran a new Asian film documentary with Jonathan Ross in the UK. He met up with GODZILLA FINAL WARS director Ryuhei Kitamura and talked about his various works (including FINAL WARS). Afterwards Kitamura goes DVD shopping with Ross. There's this whole montage where he just turns down every single film as being "crap". It went so fast that I originally missed this one...

Ross: Oh, is this a new Ultraman? (holding a copy of ULTRAMAN THE NEXT)
Kitamura: NO!

But this is the same segment where he agrees FINAL WARS "did well" in Japan, LOL!
