YOG: The Titra dubbing script

Postby GaryT » Tue Apr 04, 2006 2:37 am

Finally watched the Media Blasters SPACE AMOEBA disc, and dug out a copy of Titra's dubbing script I have. A few interesting bits of trivia:

1) The title page lists the title as SPACE AMEBA [sic]

2) For the opening narration, there is a notation saying "Use original if possible", referring to the international dub. Later, in Reel Nine, when we hear the voice of the space creature as it possesses Obata, there is the note: "Sounds like the narrator in Reel One. Suggest voices be different."

3) In general, comparing the international dub to the subtitles on the disc to the Titra script, it appears that the international dub is a somewhat more literal translation.

4) There are several notes on when characters are offscreen or they are so far away their lip movements aren't clearly visible. (The latter is denoted "Lips unclear" or sometimes "Little lips.") This presumably lets the dubbers know areas where the synch can be a little loose.

5) The script makes notes on when the international dub misprounces names like Sakura.

6) Sometimes the scripts suggests two possible versions of a line. Example: "Yes, the report came over the radio. (ALT: Yes, there's been a message on the radio.")

7) If you watch the scene in which Dr. Miya examines Rico back at the village with the international dub, you'll hear Miya say that he is hurt badly. The Titra script changes this to:

KUDO: Is he hurt bad, doctor?

MITA: No. Not physically at any rate.

There is a note stating: "Original dubbing says Riko is hurt badly. I changed it because he is up and around the next day, his only injury being shock, and in the rest of this scene Miya doesn't particularly work on him as if he was seriously hurt."

8) The script contains another long note in the scene where the natives bring the gasoline: "In original, Kudo brings up need for gasoline and suddenly natives appear carrying gasoline. In order to cut down awkwardness of this scene, I changed his line to asking about old Ombo to see if he could get his help, and kept Ayako non-commital about if he was alive or not, since Ombo shows up in Reel 10. When natives now show up with gas, it does not seem so pat."
