Yeah, the "extras" definitely needed more screen time. But this movie is still one of the better ones because of all those "extras". Why not have Gabara and Varan tag-team someone?

Gabara hadn't been invented yet.

True. But Gabara was in the next movie, there had to be some idea he would exist. Besides, it was meant as a loose illustration anyway. Any of the extras in a side show would've sufficed.

Any side show would have detracted from the story in the movie.

But then again it was EIGHT monsters vs. Ghidrah. And Ghidrah to his credit fought valiantly, but was just overwhelmed. Could he have used his rays? Sure, but then again beam wars weren't (thankfully) Nakajima's style, and it would've become a long drawn out thing, which sometimes can even sink a movie as seen later in the Heisei series.

I seriously question whether this film can be fairly evaluated today, seeing as the only version most younger fans have access to is the awful Toho dub. That one fact IMHO seriously damages an otherwise thoroughly fun G-film. But the professional voice talent in the US cut makes it seem like another film altogether.

^It's not really a good idea to evaluate a film based on the quality of dubbing, but you're right. The AIP Dub OWNS the crappy international dub that we've been stuck with as of late. The international dub just feels out of place.. Like it'd been recorded 20 years after DAM was made... Not to say that's what it is. Just the odd feeling that it gives me when I hear it. :?
