The reason I started this thread was two fold. One was because I was tired of seeing people taking pot shots at GMK in other threads and forums and didn't want to get into long off topic threads trying to figure out the reason behind the attacks on GMK.
The second reason I was hoping that people would actually post more then, "It sucks", and "I hate it". Some have, and I might not agree with their reasons, But I can better understand why they don't like the film.
Major Complaints:
Godzilla Suit Problems: Beer gut, bent neck, looks like a pluck chicken, etc.. I will admit the suit is far from perfect and some shots really showed off some of it's flaws. That being said I think Kaneko was able to hide many of the flaws most of the time. I loved the size difference between Godzilla and Baragon, to often the kaiju seem to be roughly the same size, or Godzilla was the short one, this was a nice change. I loved the head, the white eyes, the teeth, and the use of the breath as something more then a spark creator. The suit had great movement and produce the best fight since GVKG, possible since the Showa era. I will take the flaws the GMK suit has over the stiff immobile suits from the rest of the Millennium Series (other then GFW).
Evil Godzilla: People can debate whether or not Godzilla was evil in previous films till the cows come home. Personally the way Godzilla ripped through the power-lines to get to Tokyo in the original provided he wanted to burn Tokyo. But there is no doubt that Godzilla was Evil in GMK, and to me that is a triumph of the film. But if people can't get pass it, and want the hero or anti-hero version, that is their choice.
Treatment of KG: This is such a touchy subject, cause by all rights KG shouldn't have even been in the film, Mothra either. But this was Toho choice. And over all I like the way Kaneko handled KG. I like the weak version that kept getting stronger each incarnation, trying to over come Godzilla. Heck I like the GMK version of KG better then Desghidorah, Cretaceous KG, and Grand KG.
Spirits of the Dead: For me this angle really took Godzilla back to the roots of the 1st film. Provide a reason for the rampage both is 54 and in GMK, gave an interesting background for the guardian spirits as well. Yet some people can't expect this concept, yet some find Godzilla rampaging over his bones a far superior approach.
Not enough Kaiju Action: Takes to long for Godzilla to appear, battles to short and to long of stretches in between. Sure it takes awhile for Godzilla to appear, but once he does the action follows him pretty close. Yeah you cut to the human drama, but it revolves around following Godzilla trail of destruction, or attempts to stop Godzilla. I will take this over, he appears at the beginning of the film, disappears somehow, then shows up again, and disappears again, then shows up for the final battle, formula anytime.
The Human plot is boring: If you are only watching for the kaiju action, sure I can see how you might think that. But over all the human story helped the viewer understand what was happening. The BS crew gathering clues, understanding the concept of the guardian monsters, and Godzilla return (with the help of an old man that turned out to be a spirit himself in the end). The militaries attempt to stop Godzilla. And tying both these together with the father / daughter / generation gap element.
