here's what my reactions were to the movie when i saw it... (re-posted from tokyomonsters):
summary: thumbs up. really enjoyed it. a LOT. but i withhold final judgement till i see it in a more ideal manner (with subs, clearer, etc).
i can't add much more to what others have already said, in terms of pros and cons. i can add my own reactions, though.
i was never bored. i know people some were. maybe i am easily amused but i was riveted the entire time, despite not knowing what anyone was saying (except for don frye of course)!
there were so many moments (human AND kaiju) that made me go "THIS IS SOOOO COOOOOOLLLL!!!"
it's like the ultimate B sci-fi movie with 21st century slickness and style.
this movie made me feel like a kid again.
the only real downside for me? like everyone else, i wanted to see more monster action. not just because of the kaiju/human ratio, though, but because the monster time we did see was so frikkin WOW that i want more more more!
on GFW in relation to the godzilla series:
i thought the unique style was refreshing. unique to godzilla, to be clear. if nothing else this proves to me that there can be many more ways of making a godzilla movie than what we have seen in the series. in my mind, this is what the millennium series should have been all about. each one should have been done by a different director. keep GMK, GFW and one tezuka film (take your pick), and replace the others with G movies by brand new directors, including some who have never directed kaiju eiga before.
