GFW in Japan opening very short review

Greg, a good freind of mine just called from Japan and left a message. He is also a big Godzilla fan and just got to Japan Thursday. Here are the comments he made concerning GFW:

That is the worst film I have ever seen. The only thing that saved it is that it was Godzilla. That is basically it. The score was horrific. It was (the movie itself) so boring and bland. You could fall asleep the first half of the movie, and the second half you miss it because it goes so fast. Really a huge colossal dissapointment and everything you expected it to be (based on the premiere reviews) ...but I still enjoyed it for what it was mostly because it was the first time I have seen a G movie in Japan.

So.... it is beginning to more and more sound like Kitamura was not the right choice for this one time, special 50th anniversary movie. If they really wanted to go for it like this why couldn't they have tried it a couple of movies ago instead of waiting to experiment on the 50th anniversary movie! One good thing. Every G movie has at least one great scene in it somewhere. Sounds like this one has quite a few to remember and enjoy. Unfortunately it sounds like they are not strung together to make a great or even very good G film.

and yet i recently chatted with some Japanese fans who liked it. what a divisive movie this is turning out to be. I guess you just have to see it to know whether you will enjoy it or not.

I don't know the difference this will make, but Kitamura was interviewed recently and expressed his desire to have his "Director's Cut" on DVD. Perhaps he'll put back in the longer cut which may flesh out scenes and reduce the choppy feel some felt the movie had.

Maybe watching this on DVD is the way to go: effects look better and pace more palatable?
