Well the previous two Godzilla films beofre Final Wars did poorly at the box office, and they both followed old formulas and ideas.
Going back to the same old thing over and over again doesn't work. You have to do things to spice it up or change something. Even a classic like Godzilla needs to be updated and needs to evolve over time.
Final Wars wasn't exactly a sucess, but I give the filmakers credit for at least trying to do something different.
I think the major problem with The Millenium Series was that Godzilla was brought back too soon. After the abysmal Godzilla 1998 was released, I think Toho felt the need to right some wrongs and brought the series back before it should have been. It had only been four years since Godzilla was killed off in "Godzilla vs. Destroyah" (which was a near flawless swan song for Big G BTW) and I don't think the public was ready to have the series brought back. Personally, I liked every single one of the Millenium movies, even Godzilla X Mechagodzilla which seemed to get a lot of negative reviews. However, all the films, except for Final Wars, had the feeling of "Been there done that" I mean the SFX were better (Tokyo SOS is the best in the series if you judge entirely on SFX) but there still wasn't a whole lot of new material. Final Wars tried to jazz it up a little bit and do different things with the human cast that we really haven't seen before.
GMK was a tremendous movie, and Kaneko's take on Godzilla was very good, but even that movie wasn't very unique or original in terms of Godzilla movies.
Final Wars at least shocked me with some of the things the filmakers did. I had heard a few things, but for the msot part I remained spoiler free until I got the DVD, and I had a big ol' smile plastered on my face for the full duration of the film. Stuff like the Matrix fighting, motorcycle chases, big starship fights and a really over the top villian in the head Xillian was never done in Godzilla before. My only knock on that stuff was that they did a little too much of it, but IMO we got enough monster action to balance it out.
I know alot of you were upset with the shortness of some of the fights, but like I said before, looked at who Godzilla trounced. Kamackarus, Kumonga, Ebirah, Hedorah were the major ones. With the exception of Hedorah, all of those monsters should be handled easily by Godzilla's current incarnation. Godzilla used his brains to defeated Rodan, Angilas, and King Ceesar all at once, which I thought was pretty cool. And I am absolutely sure that nbody objected to Zilla getting decimated in mere seconds. Except for Hedorah getting sqaushed in 30 seconds, I had no problem with any of the fight sequences.
