I think its split down the middle with both old fans and young fans.
I've read lots reviews from old fans loving it because of the goofy "throwback" feel of the Showa days where the films didn't take themselves seriously, and I've read reviews from older fans saying they hated the modernization that was done by the director and the references to American action films.
I've read the same things from the younger folks. As far as I can tell its a film that G-Fans either love or hate, much like GMK, Hedorah, etc.
