Anyways back with the screenshots. Below are the the small nitpicks that bother me the most about GMK"s special effects. First the Baragon and Godzilla suits. Baragon for instance has a noticeable seam that runs at the base of the monster suit's neck. You can see the seam expanding during key moments in the film almost forming a crack at times. Terrible.
The next screencap is something I loathe everytime I see the movie now. Take a look at Godzilla's fins charging up with blue just before he lets loose his heat ray.
Notice the gap at the base of the fins just before the tail starts? I suppose this is part of the section in the suit that peels back to allow the suit actor entry. But seriously this shot is inexcusable. Even if the suit itself ain't perfect, the least the filmmakers could do is to adjust the camera or even re-edit the film to avoid showing that!
The lighting in the film especially during the day time battles seem way too harsh etc... By doing so you end up illuminating all the defects present in the suits and make the miniatures like that helicopter seem every more jarring. Couldnt the filmmakers have at least applied a filter or adjusted the camera angle a bit? I Kaneko Gamera Trilogy for its ability to hide these imperfections while still using miniatures and suit work.
The overall vibe I get when watching scenes like this in GMK is that the action is taking place on a miniature set. And with this wide shot with a rather bright light stage setup, it seems as if the filmmakers don't even bother trying to dispel the illusion that the monsters are fighting on a miniature set. The Gamera films (at least G2 and G3) disguise the sets and their shortcomings with creative choreography and cinematography. Credit goes to Shinji Higuchi of course! And don't forgot more night shots! Even so I still find the old showa movies like Invasion of Astro Monster (Monsterzero) to have better monster compositions with set/composite backgrounds than GMK. Seems the guy in charge of SFX work for GMK ain't made of the same calibre.
And the aforementioned terrible CGI....gold videogame Ghidorah. Meh.
