In 2004 I was thrilled about this movie, but over the years I have grown to not like this film so much. Yeah, it's good stupid fun but still, this movie was supposed to be special and I remember back in 1999 and 2000 dreaming how cool the 50th anniversary movie would be and when I heard all the monsters that would be showing up I thought this was going to be greatest Godzilla movie BUT....
First off, the opening credits....ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Toho bragged endlessly about getting some hot shot title designer from Hollywood in the form of Kyle Cooper, but who honestly names the title sequence producer in the opening titles? and for that matter, why on earth mention 'Sum 41'? Opening titles are supposed to mention the actors, director, producers and that's pretty much it....viewers were already watching the film Toho, no need to continue advertising it while it was playing! On a side note, I still chuckle whenever I see the interview with Cooper on the DVD where half of the interview is "uh, um, I like Godzilla", then when asked what his favorite kaiju is he busts out a Kongzilla statue! priceless!
Second, the music. terrible. Even the Godzilla films of the 70s had a film score but Kitamura decided to replace it with his usual junk techno he puts into all of his films.
Finally, Kitamura. I don't believe he was right to do this movie. It is pretty obvious he did not care too much about this movie. The guy blew the budget on meaningless stuff like getting washed up rockstars and SUVs crashing for no apparent reason which left Asada with pennies which were quickly absorbed in the making of all the suits, which were barley seen. And what is up with the casting? OK, There were a bunch of veterans who I was very happy to see show up, but there should have been much more. Take that pointless round table discussion for example, Take out all of those actors no one knows anything about and throw cameos of Haruo Nakajima, Kenpachiro Satsuma, Ryo Hariya, Koichi Kawakita all who seemed more then willing to do so. And throw in Megumi Odaka who pretty much could have made up for the utter disregard of the the Heisei series entirely but has since seems to have been forgotten by Toho. Hell, even Shogo Tomiyama would have been great to see!
All Kitamura really did with this movie was make it his usual Kitamura fighting movie but throw monsters in there because well, Toho was paying the guy to.
I was expecting ALOT more out of a 50th Anniversary movie. Hopefully Toho learned from their mistake and will never go this route again.
