On the subject of the SFX, you can make out some of the poor shots even on the tiny screen, but they're really in your face on the big screen. The aforementioned Kamakuras puppet comes to mind, and the tanks with the sparklers taped to them. Others aren't so obvious, like some shots in the Ebirah battle (my favorite); but they're no worse than, say, Kiriko hitching a ride on G in GxM. There are a number of real crummy shots in GFW that made me wince, and they'll be more obvious on the DVD, I suspect. More often than not, they just looked like rushed composites.
BUT, there are some MAGNIFICENT SFX shots in GFW as well, and you just won't appreciate how grand they are until you see (and hear) them on the big screen (maybe DVD). The Angilas in Shanghai sequences may be the best ever in the series. Most of the Ebirah fight is brilliant, IMO, in FX achievement. The scene of the UFO fighters buzzing Tokyo was great. And Godzilla in the crater was a chilling image. I can't think of one quite like it anywhere else in the series.
My criticism of the SFX in GFW has always been the inconsistency. The great shots make the bad ones look worse when they're right next to each other. But I credit them for raising the bar, and feel that a little more money and time would have made the difference.
