Buckled down a bought a Samsung plasma. Hopefully it'll hold me over until OLED become affordable. 64 inches, I like brag about it .

funny this topic came back. My wife & I were away for the weekend, one of the things we came back to was the audio on our TV not working. According to my daughter (and mother who was watching the kids), it just stopped working in the middle of watching a show. I checked all the inputs, it is universal across HDMI, A/V, USB etc... I made sure the volume was not on *mute*, the stereo was on, and it was not set to SAP (al the standard stuff FAQ asks). The I even completely unplugged the TV for a few minuets to let it reset. Still nothing. Then I tried to turn it back on just for grins, and let it play silently while I tried to reach Philips Customer service (which is not open on Sunday...should have guessed), but then the sound started working. it would work for about 10 minutes, then cut out again. Over a 3 hour period the audio would randomly start and stop. I guess its just the audio going out completely. The TV is only 5 years old. ( well technically 6 years old, but I bought it brand new if sitting int he box for a year counts)I don't know if it is an easy fix, or if it is worth the $$$. For now we have downgraded to a 32 inch monster of a CRT I drug out of the garage. Hey after 15+ years t still works and I got my Blu ray player & Netflix working, that's all that matters.

I don't have 500-700 to sink into a new TV at the moment, so I guess were ok with this, unless the other can be fixed for under 200, I'm just going to let it go.

That TV looks nice but sadly it supports the lower supported HDR format (Dolby Vision) which is a shame because that appears to be the better of the two HDR formats but everyone is adopting HDR10.

Hmmm they should have saved some money and not incudled a tuner. A lot of people don't use the tuner any more.

I don't see 8K taking off. People are just now jumping on the 4k bandwagaon so they're going to get really upset at 8K.

I myself plan on getting a 4K HDR TV with in the next 18 months just need to pay a few things off first before I make the jump. I'm all set on a 4K player I just need the content which I have some already. I have a PS4 Pro so some of my games will do 4K and I plan on getting Xbox One's Project Scorpio either at launch or soon after.

With in the next couple of months I'll be making the leap to 4K. I've decided to get the Sony XBR43x800D 43" 4K HDR TV. I originally wanted to get a TV that supported 4K, HDR and 3D but sadly those are no longer being made and the smallest size I could get was 55". Another factor for me not going with a 55" set is because I recently had to move back home temporarily so there's no way I could fit a 55" set in my room. Plus with the latest firmware update for the PS4 I am able to watch all my 3D films on my PS VR so I'm not completely out of luck on my 3D movies.

Perhaps when I get my own place I'll track down a 4K 3D HDR set but from what I've read I should be fairly happy with the set I'm getting.

It was on sale so my parents paid for it I'm just going to pay them back with in the next few weeks. I'll give them $200 now then I have my old TV to sell which I should get $300 for that. Plus I managed to snag a NES Classic Edition which is going for about $300 on eBay so there's the rest of the money right there.

I haven't set it up yet doing so tomorrow.

So early this year I completed my little nerd-virgin cave for me to run away and hide. It is part "theater" part office.

I was going to get a TV but the more I thought about it the more I wanted a bigger screen. By the time I was ready to get what I needed Epson came out with a projector that fakes the whole 4K thing. It accepts a 4K signal and can clean the image up but it isn't a true 4K projector. Those come from Sony and are 10k at their lowest price.

I got the Epson 6040ub and got a fixed 92" screen. I am enjoying it a lot right now except for one tidbit and that is when I try and watch a DVD and upscale it to a 92" screen you begin to notice how crappy it is compared to a bluray. Depends on the movie though. Watching Gamera 2 (remastered from a 4k source) on a large screen makes me happy. The Epson also does a great job of handling G'14 which is an absurdly dark movie. I watch most movies on "Bright Cinema" and most cartoons on "Natural." For the most part the image quality is great considering it is a projector. Oh ya one more small gripe. I never noticed this until someone told me about it but apparently projection has a hard time with horizontal camera pans and now I notice it all the time. Sometimes the backgrounds slightly skip.

It has 3 power settings on it, ECO, Medium and High. ECO mode you get about 5000 hours of bulb life and High you get about 3500 hours. I never take it off of ECO because I have ideal lighting conditions. If this was in a brightly lit family room then I would have to stick it on High but once you do that the fan becomes noticeable.

I wish I knew how to take better pictures with my camera to capture the projector in action but this is what I got...

Very cool. Some day I hope to get a projector and a huge (120inch or more) screen. Maybe by the time it's realistic for me the 4K UHD projectors will be more reasonable...

The "skipping" background you're referring to is called judder and is inherent to film. It's a result of the 24fps speed. The only way to reduce or eliminate it is to increase the frame rate. Some tvs do this artificially but it looks like garbage. And it's not just the background. Anything that moves quickly enough in a horizontal direction will exhibit judder. And it's not just porjectors. Tvs have it too, though it might be slightly less noticeable b/c unless you set your tv to 24fps, it's probably displaying 30fps (which films are converted to for home video). It is also just more obvious the larger the screen is, just like any other imaging artifact.

I wish I knew how to capture an image of the screen so you guys could see it in action but unfortunately my camera is not capable.

Watching old movies on this can be a lot of fun. 92" was as big as I could go before things started overlapping. They do make border-less screens that might have given me 100" but they become laughably expensive. Also that 120/240 hz motion stuff is gross. I can't stand how that looks. Unless you watch sports all damn day it does not make movies look good.
