How far away are you sitting from the screen if you don't mind me asking?

Some day when I build/get my own house I want to do a home theater/gaming room and I'm not sure if I want to get a very good TV or do a projector? I think I'd do the TV route just because I think it'd look better but your screen caps make it look very good on a projector. Also do you know if any projectors support 4K HDR?

For movies, a good projector is definitely where it's at. I don't know about gaming but I'd imagine it's fine. In my dream home theater I'd actually have a large tv, in the 70 inch range. OLED or whatever the best tech is at the time. And then I'd have a retractable movie screen that rolls down out of the ceiling in front of the tv that is much larger. And I'd wire it so that any media input is routed to both the tv and the projector so that you can watch anything on either. That way you can always enjoy your nice comfy media room but don't have to burn your projector bulb when watching stuff that doesn't warrant the giganto screen.

I am sitting about 10 feet away from the projector. The projector itself is mounted about 12 feet away from the wall. The minimum throw distance on my projector is somewhere around 10'4". The projector supports 4K sources which make for a tiddy image but it isn't a true 4K projector. It also supports HDR. I threw the Wii-U on it and it surprisingly has no ghosting.

Like I said I wish I could figure out how to accurately capture an image off the screen because the camera isn't doing it justice.

When I bought this thing they brought me upstairs to see a real 4K projector and there is a difference in image quality but worth the extra 6 grand? I didn't think so.

It's cool that your projector will display HDR and process 4K signals (even if it doesnt project at 4K). I've yet to really investigate it in person, but from everything I've read up on, the high dynamic range is a much more significant aspect of the better picture of Ultra HD than just the increased resolution.

Do you know what HDR standard it is? My guess is it's HDR premium since the project isn't native 4K. I'm still not convinced on a projector but then again if you spend the time and money to get a good screen, good project and the lighting just right you can a decent output. I know when my local theater expanded there's a huge difference in quality between the new theaters with the newer projectors vs the older screens. I'm still several years off from doing a home theater room but something like you wnat canofhundingers might not be a bad idea. Ideally my perfect set up would be both the TV and the projector support native 4K, both HDR10 and Dolby Vision and 3D but I highly doubt that'll happen.

Changing gears do you guys think it'd be worth it to hire a home theater company to come in and calibrate my new TV? The reason I ask is I'm having a hell of a time trying to get the thing correctly calibrated for both games and movies. My PS4 Pro is all set I got that to where I like it the only thing I might do is tweak the brightness a little more but I finally got the colors to pop in HDR. The Xbox One S is being a bit more problematic since that's what I use for both gaming and movies. Gaming I just copied my PS4 settings but when watching media like on Netflix and Youtube that causes the picture to be oversaturated. So I just set it to the Cinema Pro setting and while it produces a decent result I'm still not 100% happy with it. Then comes the issue of when I switch back to Game mode for gaming the brightness gets jacked all the way back up.

Update on HDR on the projector. At first it looked pretty dark and obnoxious. Especially on AmazonPrime UHD streaming. I'm not sure which fixed it. Either Amazon changed their streaming or the firmware updates on my hardware fixed it but HDR is much better than it was a few months ago. It can still be a little dark but I don't mind it.

Does anyone here have suggestions on how to calibrate a 4K HDR TV for both HDR content as well as SDR? I tried following the settings for my set (the Sony 40XBR800D) on rtings.com and while playing Rise of the Tomb Raider on the Xbox One X with those settings the picture looked dull and faded I know with a properly calibrated set you aren't supposed to have "vivid" colors because that crushes black levels and such but it just didn't seem right to me.

So thinking toward the future when I get my own place should I go with a TV or a projector?

I mainly play games and stream but will be watching discs from time to time so what are your guys' thoughts on the projector vs TV debate?

^ I was going to say something along those lines. Maybe the tech has improved in the past couple years (not familiar with the 4K projector market, so this is anecdotal to 1080p), but unless you drop some serious money (also bulb replacement aren't cheap) you need a room dimmer and no daylight to get your dollars worth.

I adore my projector....but it's pretty much in a dedicated room for it and it wouldn't do well in my living room, for example.

Granted it's 8 years old, and wasn't really the TOP OF THE LINE at the time (I opted to not pay for certain features I knew I wouldn't need).

I'm just curious as it'll be quite awhile before I do get to it. I'm still torn if I want to dip my feet in a projector because I hear really good things about them. Ideally I'd do a 4K HDR projector if I where to get into it but that'll cost a pretty penny. Most likely I'll stick with a TV but it would be nice just to try a projector out.

I'm starting my vacation here in about three weeks and one of the first things I plan to do on it is to rearrange my bedroom and by doing that I'm going to spruce up my TV area. I plan on wall mounting my TV probably with a tilting wall mount and also I want to get one of those LED light strips to add some ambient lighting because I normally watch movies/play video games at night when its very dark and I don't have a light on. Which is a very bad thing for your eyes and probably why I have so many headaches.

Does anyone here use any of those LED light strips or have recommendations on which one to get? We have a cheap $4.88 one at my work but after reading reviews on it from the website and Amazon.com it sounds like its not the greatest. A major complaint is you get two male USB ends so you can't connect, another is the remote is junk and can actually ruin your lights. So I think I'm going to stay away from that one.

8K? Most people can’t even see the difference from 1080p to 4K from normal viewing distances. Seems like overkill.

Bingo. 4K can be worth it, if you have a big enough screen. But to see the increased resolution of 8K most people would have to be sitting so close that you couldn’t fit the whole screen in your field of vision. It would be like sitting on the front row of a movie theater.

I don't know why they're trying to push 8K when 4K is just now starting to take hold. Plus we really wouldn't be able to get a benefit out of 8K.

I think TV manufactures should instead focus on improving brightness and HDR on TV because honestly HDR is what really matters to me now. It makes games and movies so much better if done correctly.

Well, I’m finally going to soon be purchasing a 4K UHD TV, and it’s come down to either Samsung or Vizio. I’ve read a number of reviews and comparisons of both. Curious to see what y’all recommend on here before I make my final decision. It looks like I can’t go wrong with either one, but still curious nonetheless.
