I really hate this trend of curved screens. If you're not going to have a giant, literally movie theater sized screen, all a curve is doing is limiting your optimum seat position. The point of a curve is to help it better accommodate/fill your field of view for better immersion. If the screen doesn't actually extend to at least near your peripheral vision, it's really pointless.

From what I can gather the pros of a curved TV are that it provides a more immersive experience, some users say it produces a 3D effect. So pretty much yeah thats the only benefit I see from a curved TV. To me a properly calibrated HDTV with a sound system and 3D can be pretty immersive.

Nope, the first curved screens available to consumers were 55". I've seen them in stores and they're not nearly big enough to even begin seeing the benefit (unless you're going to basically pull a chair right up to it so that it fills your field of view and you're the only one watching the tv).

When I say you need a huge screen to realize the supposed benefit of a curve, I mean a HUGE screen. There's not a tv in the world big enough to make it worthwhile right now. For a typical house, sitting on a typical couch that is a typical distance from the screen (and I'm basing "typical" on what I see in my friends and relatives very average middle class homes), you'd need a tv that literally takes up the entire wall, and even then it probably still wouldn't be big enough.

Any 3D content i've watched or played on my TV or my cousin's TV is depth there's no really jumping out of the screen. A few things here and there have it.

RIP Plasma :(. Shame I'll never be able to get one, wonder if OLED will be as good as they claim. My Westinghouse is pretty low-end, but it just barely qualifies me for the 21st century. Now to see how much time I'll have to spend with the calibration disc. Our very own poster John is a gold mine for info about HDTVs and digital formats.

I don't know what your budget is, but plasmas are actually pretty much the least expensive tvs now largely because it's a mature technology that hasn't had to be continually updated with digital band-aids like LCD has. And it wouldn't surprise me if you could find some pretty stellar close-out deals as they phase the plasmas out. I mean, I got a 60 inch panasonic plasma for $999 over two years ago. Just checking bestbuy.com they have a 60 inch Samsung for $799 or a 51 inch for $549.

its rather telling that the 4k tvs were beaten by 1080p displays... Sheer number of pixels isn't nearly as important as the marketers want you to think!!

But the bullet and picked up a Samsung 5300 plasma on Amazon. Hopefully it's a good set, it's certainly very big. I'm currently trying in vain to use the Disney WOW disc to calibrate my various TVs.

Hey guys. Just about ready to upgrade from our Phillips 55" HDTV. Gonna be looking at 60"-70" TVs. Any suggestions? Samsung? Vizio? Etc. It won't be another Phillips though.

Either brand will do fine. Vizio produces some pretty quality TVs now and they should have a CinemaWide set in that range.
