Computer Problem

Alright, I know we have some computer good guys in here so I figured I'd ask.

I have an HP laptop running Windows Vista.
Other day, I opened the computer up and got the blue screen of death. So I powered down the computer and when I turned it back on I got a "no bootable device" error.

Now, I've sucked it up and just gone out and bought a new hard drive for this computer, but I really want to try to get the data off the old hard drive.

I want to try installing the old hard drive on a desktop that I have as a second hard drive, but when I go to my system setup and enable the additional SATA port on that computer (which runs XP, btw) I'm getting the same error message.

So I can't even start up the computer to ATTEMPT to recover the data from it with this hard drive...

ARGH! I don't want to pay $100 (Best Buy's price for data recovery) especially since I feel I know enough of what I'm doing here...it's pissin me off...
