^ I'm hoping the sudden, unexpected popularity of Devilman will lend some success to Seven Sea's classic manga line.

... and if you don't like Devilman, maybe the Cutie Honey classic collection they're releasing this summer is more your speed?

^ Seven Seas has been kind of a "B" publisher, but they're started making more high profile acquisitions, including this line of classic manga. The translations should be great: they're by Zack Davisson, who's translated all of the Shigeru Mizuki releases into English. He's pretty much the go-to classic manga translation guy.

Re: The Comic Book Thread --- OLDEST YOU OWN???

Postby Jinzo Ningen » Sun Feb 11, 2018 10:08 am

Saw this thread and thought I ask the gang here who collect... how old is the oldest comicbook issue you own?

Just curious. I have a few from the late 60's. Nothing older. My largest single title collection is probably The Incredible Hulk. I don't have the first 1962 six-issue run, regrettably. For those who don't know, shortly after the cancellation of his own mag he began appearing as one of the co-features (along with Namor) in Tales to Astonish. As his popularity grew, Marvel changed the title and it became the Hulk's full-time mag starting with issue #102. I have from 104 - 460ish, when I stopped subscribing/collecting.

^I have two issues of Uncle Scrooge from the early '60s, one of which has no cover (so it was rather cheap!).

I have wide swaths of Uncle Scrooge and Mirage TMNT issues, but nothing like a complete collection. My closest to complete sets of single issues are Hellboy (missing, I believe 11 issues) and BPRD (if I hunt down the 7 earliest issues I'll have a complete run). Oh, and I suppose my collection of other Hellboy-universe spinoffs is complete (Lobster Johnson, Witchfinder, etc.) but those are scattered miniseries that come out periodically so I don't feel they really count.

New Stan Sakai interview -

https://www.cbr.com/stan-sakai-usagi-yo ... interview/

He talks about:
- The switch to miniseries format
- The in-development animated series (it's still early, but he's been told the project is proceeding more rapidly than normal at the studio because there's a lot of excitement about it)
- The historical basis behind the first miniseries format storyline: "The Hidden" (about Japan's Hidden Christians after the religion was outlawed)
- A planned 4th Space Usagi series, as well as a few other ideas he's been kickin' around (including a version of Sherlock Holmes)

It took me a while to get through it, but I finally finished the first Omnibus to the Lee/Kirby run on Fantastic Four. It started out a little sluggish for my taste, but having read Silver Age DC comics, I can definitely see why it was considered revoluionary at the time. Fortunately, by issue 15 they really seemed to have found their footing and I enjoyed every issue more than the last. It was funny how they accidentally named Bruce Banner Bob Banner during a two parter that featured the Thing fight the Hulk. My biggest issue was with how many times Doctor Doom and Namor appeared as it felt like they were the villains for half of the book. Also, how many times does Doom need to get sucked out into space?

Nevertheless, I found myself reading at least one issue a night (sometimes two) due to getting hooked on it, so I am definitely looking forward to starting Volume 2 this weekend. Once again I also am resenting the material I grew up with in the 90s because those Fantastic Four stories are down right dreadful compared to this.

^It's true: lotta Namor and Doom in those early issues! I guess because they were hits right-off-the-bat they kept repeating them until they could stock up on other opponents for the FF?

^If you're interested in IDW's Godzilla comics you may want to be hasty in picking them up: now that they've lost the license they'll go out of print.

Took a bunch of comics, books, and Blu-Rays I knew I'd never read/watch again to this store that does trade-ins and came out with enough store credit to buy the coolest thing in the store: the first volume 'Gallery Edition' (what Dark Horse calls their version of the 'Artist Edition' format that IDW has made famous) of Usagi Yojimbo! It contains several stories stretching from Usagi's early mid-'80s appearances through the mid-'90s: The short stories that introduced characters like Gen, Jotaro and Kitsune as well as the original 'origin' tale the made up the first four issues of the comic reprinted in full.

These books, for those who don't know, reproduce the original comic art with fidelity as close as possible to the real thing: high quality color photos of the art showing the texture and color of the paper, the pencil lines and painted-out corrections that are purposely lost when the art reproduced in a published comic, and the art is reproduced in the original size that the artist worked in. Most comic art is shrunk down for publication, but each each artist feels comfortable drawing in different sizes, so the size of these books vary wildly. This one's big, but some are enormous. This one is as 'small' as I've seen one of these books.

Here's Stan Sakai himself with a copy for scale:
