I recently finished a collection of stories by Nikolai Gogol. Sometimes they ramble more than I find interesting, but overall, they clicked with me. I know that he influenced David Lynch a fair bit. Given how strange and surreal their works can be, that's easy enough to see. Also, I feel "The Portrait" should be mandatory reading for any artist.
Started Jack London's White Fang this evening. So far, the writing style and plot have me interested.
