I've been on a particularly intense kaiju kick this week.

King Kong Escapes. Man, I love this movie. Not perfect by a long shot, but I never tire of it. It's a terrible shame that the U.S. version (the one I watched) is essentially dubbed like a cartoon. Even though the film is based on an animated series and has a strong cartoonlike quality, voicing real actors as though they were animated characters really works against the movie in my opinion. And while the American cut may have slightly better pacing, the many skips in the soundtrack that result from the edits are extremely jarring. Still, some truly magnificent miniature work and a great, spirited performance from Nakajima shining through that awful Kong suit help to make this one of my favorites.

Daimajin. Another great picture. Particularly impressive here are the special effects, which rank among the best in the entire genre, and the payoff at the end when we finally get to see Majin release his wrath. As a fan of both samurai and giant monster movies, Daimajin and its sequels provide a very unique kind of satisfaction for me.

Godzilla vs. Hedorah. Though this is one of my least favorite Godzilla films, I find myself enjoying it a bit when I'm in the right mood, like I was today. I never noticed just how many composites and mattes are used to put the humans in the same frame with the monsters. It's an easily overlooked but nicely done element of the effects work.

The Devil's Rejects is excellent. While there have been a lot of modern attempts to stylistically imitate the essence of horror films from the '70s and '80s, Rob Zombie managed to singlehandedly recreate the tone of classic horror down to a tee with that movie, almost effortlessly. He doesn't need intentional print damage or fake movie trailers, he's got the look and feel of old-fashioned horror down pat, and he imbues The Devil's Rejects with it like a pro.

I dunno man we've been over this before...I just think that his films are essentially moral black holes with no redeamable qualities to them...but if I had to pick favorites it'd be Halloween 1 and 2

Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All Out Attack - 3/5
Still a decent entry in the series, but for some reason this time I found all the mystical nonsense to be especially silly. *shrug* Still love watching this.
