I've got a truly horrible habit of letting my monthly comics pile up. I always read the latest Hellboy or Usagi, but in the last year or so of the 9 or so issues I get a month 8 go into the pile! Horrible, right? Anyway, I'm sitting down and reading these comics this weekend and really enjoying myself.

Read a dozen issues of Dark Horse Presents and I have a favorite new comic character: Sabertooth Swordsman! An anthropomorphic fantasy hero who's adventures are an excuse for incredibly dense, detailed, psychedelic artwork.

Halfway into my pile of Abe Sapien issues. I wasn't sold one this newer Mignolaverse spin-off at first, but now it's really grown on me. The art, alternating between the two brothers Fiumara, is phenomenal.

I have 5 comics, and 6 volumes of manga lying about.
Let's not even discuss the novels I've got to read. @_@
It's hard to find time anymore, and I read so much. I gather they're going to destroy the
Marvel universe this year, so that should cut down on my reading.

So how does Clark pull off fingerless gloves under his Daily Planet outfit? Or does new 52 care as little about Clark Kent as Man of Steel did?

J. Michael Straczynski's Superman: Earth One saga concludes with its third and final entry which will also pit the Man of Steel against his primary adversary, Lex Luthor.

Wow. That's a massive step in the right direction for DC. They got Gene Luen Yang to be the writer for Superman?!

Books of various genres, books aimed at younger readers, books aimed at women, more ethnic and gender diversity on the page and in the talent behind the scenes? When did the folks at DC get so smart?

BTW, can you spot all the international comics characters in this French magazine cover?

I love that Drawn and Quarterly has been releasing multiple volumes of Shigeru Mizuki's manga every year for the last couple of years, but '14 and '15 are exclusively his historical material. It's great, don't get me wrong... but where's Kitaro? I want more Kitaro!

Image

I shot D&Q an e-mail and the next day got a reply back saying to look forward to more Kitaro volumes starting next year!

Happy dance!!!

So I'm sure being a father is part of it, but I find Scott Snyder's "Wytches" to be one of the most legitimately scary comics I have read.

^How do you feel about The Exorcist? I'm no parent, but I feel the real horror of the film is having something horrible happen to your kid and that feeling of helplessness.

Something I find really interesting is that people can be awful myopic about the scope of comics being published. For people who don't know nothing about nothing comics are only about superheroes, and for many superhero fans their view is only somewhat expanded: superheroes, franchise adaptations, and creator-owned genre titles from the likes of Image, Dark Horse, BOOM, IDW, Valiant, and Dynamite. The truth of the matter is that most of the best selling comics in America are titles aimed at women and young folk that many comic fans have never heard of.

http://comicsalliance.com/bookscan-sales-figures-2014/

Out of the top twenty I'll hasten a guess that Walking Dead, Saga, and Attack on Titan are probably the only ones the typical comic store crowd would be familiar with.

In other news: I was reading the latest volume of Carl Barks' Uncle Scrooge comics from Fantagraphics, and this image of Scroogey imagining himself as a Southern gentleman made me laugh a whole lot.

Popping in here to recommend the new Ant-Man, Squirrel Girl comics.
They're great.

Moon Knight and Secret Avengers are both great as well though Secret Avengers is ending soon.
Moon Knight I recommend because Moon Knight is a fantastic character and I just want to get more people to read his books.
