There's no major cataclysmic event that takes place but in Mad Max, it IS a society that has begun to break down. They're still trying to cling to the sense of law and order they already had, but you can tell that grip is starting to slip. By the time of Road Warrior, that grip has pretty well slipped and by the time Beyond Thunderdome rolls around, whatever seemingly uneventful "collapse" that took place has pretty much completed and the world is just a crazy, CRAZY place.

But yeah, it's pretty gradual and there's never anything said about what happens.

Is the whole series in Australia or do they show what is happening to the entire world?

Mad Max 2- I still felt a little under whelmed by this one, but for different reasons. The car chase scenes were pretty awesome and made me want to play Twisted Metal, but the movie was a little too over the top in silliness. The main bad guy leader makes He-Man look straight. I also did not care for the lack of any sort of development for Max at all. He was the same in the beginning as it was in the end, so that was disappointing. The dialog was still drowned out by the music at times too, which was also annoying. Still, it was fun to see so I give it a 7/10.

Mad Max 3 - Wow, this was absolute pig ****!! Why is the new one taking place after this one? The story made no sense whatsoever and it just gets worse as it goes along. Not just that, but what was the point of Auntie chasing after them when she just leaves Max? No wonder it took them 30 years to make a new one. I give this crap a 3/10.

Not taking itself seriously was easily the best part to me.

Avengers: Age of Ultron

Very enjoyable. Some fun new characters, and smartly puts the emphasis on the characters who don't have movies of their own, but at the same time a bit samey compared to all the Marvel films as a whole. It's not the more distinct, creative success the two 2014 offerings were, but I wouldn't call it a misstep either. It's an average entry.

The May issue of Wired has an interview with the director about the films (and a lot of interesting info about the special effects.. mostly practical with the CG enhancements primarily used for removal of safety equipment and tire tracks) but here's what George Miller said about the amgbigous timeline

Saw the old Mortal Kombat movie after being stuck on the MK craze with the latest MKX. This movie is definitely something. :P

Finished Thunderdome. I kind of appreciate the increased production value but the story did little for me. I still like it more than the first, so it'd go:

Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior
Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome
Mad Max

I think the story with the kids gave me a very Hook/Peter Pan vibe. It kind of almost works thematically because After Max loses his family he distances himself from people. It's kind of fitting he helps children, of all people, and psuedo family by the end. Though the violence being toned down is a bit strange after the last two. Whatevs.

The Pyramid - a really awful found footage movie that can't even commit to its found-footage gimmick and constantly shows views that shouldn't be possible unless a monster is holding a camera or a ghost or there are camera in the pyramid or something. It's SLIGHTLY redeemed by a final 20 minutes where the literal god Anubis shows up and rips out people's hearts for laughs but all that did was just make me wish the whole movie was as willfully stupid and FUN as those final 20 minutes, because the preceding hour is TRASH.

Lost River - more a mishmash of the films that influenced first-time-director Ryan Gosling than anything really unique and original on its own. It's not bad, but it's SLOW and never quite goes for it the way it should.

One Million Years B.C.

Now, I love me some Harryhausen dinosaurs... but I have to say that I thought his work in Gwangi was much better and When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth was the all-around better cheesy caveman movie. I didn't dislike the movie, but seeing it so soon after those two did it no favors.

Mad Max 4 - Or as I like to call it, Twisted Metal The Movie - Now THIS is what The Expendables should have been. This movie is a high octane explosion fest that is pretty much one long car combat sequence with only moments of room to breath, and yet, the movie finds away to keep you engaged in what is going on without ever getting bored. If you are looking for a plot or character development, go somewhere else as this feels like it is just a video game with cut scenes in between to break up the action. The acting is fine for what it wanted to be, but the highlights include the fact that nearly everything is done with practical effects over CGI and its musical score is magnificent to the ear. It is no where near as good as Ex Machina or Avengers 2, but it is still a great movie that needs to be scene in the theater. I give it a 7/10 stars.

Just got back from Fury Road. Holy crap was that entertaining. I'm pretty sure I like more than Avengers 2, and it is definitely one of the best movies of the summer, possibly the year, for me. Made me want to see if there are any car mods for the Fallout games, because the Mad Max game doesn't come out until September (probably around the time of the DVD release). Max is very much a western post-apocalypse ronin, coming into a situation and being the upper hand to the disadvantaged. I really hope that they go through with more Mad Max movies, but this one set a high mark to follow.

Ex Machina is great. Wow, instantly the best film of the year for me. It's a VERY efficient film/story. So good.

Moonraker - Oh god my eyes, MY EYES!!! I forgot just how bad this movie was. It is terrible. The acting is bad, especially from the lady playing Goodhead, who was obviously just casted for her looks (for some reason, she isn't even pretty) rather than her acting... hahahahahahaha... I can't even finish that sentence. Drax is a horrible villain who is pretty much repeating the same plot from the last movie. I give this garbage movie a 3/10.
