lol

We've got two friends who have never seen any of the movies before Goldeneye, so we are spending the year watching all of the movies in order leading up to Spectre's release in Nov.

One of our friends has been enjoying them immensely, the other says the Connery movies are boring as all hell and wants to know how the series ever made it out of the 60s. He is also taken aback about why there would be live nukes on a training mission's plane in Thunderball.

Having seen 3 Connery movies and 2 from Craig, should I ever get into the series, I kinda wonder if my take is gonna be that Connery's the best Bond in the weakest crop of movies. Goldfinger rules, but Thunderball and Dr. No were sleepy sleepers.

I chalk a lot of the slow boring-ness of some of the 60's bond films on the style of filmmaking at the time. Being a child of the 80's and 90's growing up with movies cutting more and more of the slow non-action, non-heavily scored bits I can understand how some of the films might have seemed dull. Some times the quite tension falls flat for some people. I could see that happening for some people with From Russia with Love and others, even though I loved it.

There were a few that were rather dull to me. But overall each Bond had there ups and downs. I think that George Lazenby could have been good if his Bond wasn't trying to be undercover as some scientist for like 60% of the movie.

I watched the first half of Cosmopolis. I typically like Cronenberg but I really couldn't get into this at all.

Cargo - A Swiss science fiction movie which is basically Alien meets The Matrix. Its attempts to build atmosphere sometimes work, but mostly, the movie is flat and plodding. The romantic angle is completely unconvincing.

The Fifth Element - This was a fun ride. I wish Leeloo had been given more to do, and the movie has '90s male fantasy written all over it, but I appreciated the light tone and the cast. Not to mention the practical effects, which are quite good. Just the kind of movie I've been looking for, where the positives are concerned.

Fast and Furious 7 - As a whole, the movie is a pretty solid entry in the franchise, as it is a great conclusion, but it is not without its negatives. The characters are pretty much invincible throughout the entire thing while the villains clearly know they are in a movie because everything is so scripted. There is a scene where the villain should not even know what is going to happen, and yet, he is not surprised when it happens, which did take me out of the movie for a moment. Also, this movie is more of a generic action flick rather than a car heist one, which is disappointing. Most of the action scenes were great though and there was some really good dialog. It is a fantastic ending to the series and Universal does NOT need to do anymore because this is the best ending you could ask for. Overall, it isn't as good as the last movie that came out, but I still give it a nice 7/10 stars.

Did any of the armor in Iron Man 2 have a gimmick? Aside from like, the suitcase armor, nothing stands out. Same with Avengers. The armor itself didn't really have a gimmick except for the way it was applied.

Unless I'm forgetting something. For me, personally, I don't really consider "self-applying armor" a gimmick as much as a practical necessity. He can't be expected to lug around all the machines that put his armor onto him in the first movie at all times.

Big Trouble in Little China

First time watching this all the way through. Can you believe it? Massive fun in the Buckaroo Banzai/Cornetto Trilogy/Guardians of the Galaxy mode. John Carpenter had some sort of perfect 'popcorn movie' code cracked in the '80s.

West Side Story

You might act like you're too cool for a romantic musical with singing, dancing street gangs, but you get to the ending... and, I dare you not to tear up! I did! I admit it!

I nominate Rita Moreno for MVP of the film, Russ Tamblyn is bearable, Kolchak's boss is a racist cop, and John Astin pops up for a minute to make you go "Hey, it's Gomez!"

I love it because it's so goofy. I think Moore is actually really great for his first few outings. Moonraker is an atrocity, and everything after was too down to earth for Moore. Moore belongs in crazy stuff like L&LD and MWTGG far more than he does in FYEO or AVTAK. He was also just wayyy too old by those 80s flicks.

The Incredible Hulk - This isn't anywhere near my favorites list for the Marvel movies, but it is a damn good movie nonetheless. Norton is fantastic as Banner and Liv Tyler is not bad as Betty. Definitely the best version in live action to date. I also love Hurt as General Ross and Roth is amazing as Abomination. The CGI does look a bit dated by today's standards, but it still looks decent enough to the point that it doesn't take away from the movie one bit. It is a shame Norton decided to be a little baby after this movie, but hey, at least it got us Mark Ruffalo instead. I give this one a nice 7/10 stars.

Christine - We saw this at the Drafthouse tonight and I gotta be honest, I was not a big fan of this movie. It was kind of dumb, the movie moved way too slowly in the first hour, and the payoff did not really feel like it. Also, outside of the score, it just didn't really feel like a John Carpenter movie. I'm glad I saw it finally though, and on the big screen, but I kind of expected more. Overall, I give it a 6/10.

Batman vs Robin - This movie sucked! Batman was an utter and completely "OH GODZILLA! WHAT TERRIBLE LANGUAGE!". Both Batman and Nightwing were invincible as even when they were stabbed in multiple parts, they were fine 5 seconds later. The story was lackluster. Hell, the entire Court turned out to be worthless. Everything about this movie was awful and the voice for Damian remains dreadful. Overall, I give it a 5/10 as it was worse than Son of Batman. At least it was better than War.

^Thank heavens Abbott and Costello decided to make that movie. Otherwise the monsters would have gone out on those 'House of' movies!

The Quiet Man

John Ford and John Wayne take a break from Westerns to make this charming romanric dramedy set in Ireland. A bunch of great actors, gorgeous location footage (those who say Blu Ray is wasted on old films must be blind), and just an enjoyable easygoing kind of a film.

Iron Man 2 - This movie is a mixed bag. First off, it isn't as good as the first one, which is one of its downsides. Secondly, the entire Stark Expo thing is kind of dumb. Finally, Whiplash is such a lackluster villain and he was utterly pointless here. There was no need for him to be in here. On the positive side, Downey is amazing and I loved the scenes with Black Widow, especially when she kicks all of the guards' asses while Tony's body guard is excited to have beaten one dude. There are a lot of face palm inducing moment but movie is at least entertaining. I give it a 6/10 because its negatives do majorly hurt the film.

Thor - Utterly fantastic. Still one of the best Marvel movies to date as it not only features characters from Norse mythology (a subject that is severely lacking in movies) but it also gives us an interesting take on the Marvel version of it. The casting is nothing short of great and the plot is enjoyable even if simple. The chemistry between Chris and Natalie is top notch and one of the better romances to occur in these things. Overall, this movie gets an easy 8/10.
