Pacific Rim

This is the first time I've watched it since we've known that PacRim 2 is coming. So excited.

Still burst out laughing (not in a humorous way, but in a roller coaster way) when Otachi unfurls her wings. If there was ever a moment in a film that I felt was made just for me.

I still turn up my nose at the notion that 3D is a necessity.

Inglorious Basterds - This movie has tension up the wazoo. Aside from brief moments, it's fairly quite movie with just dialogue, mostly in French as well. But god can it been nerve racking. From the opening scene at the farm, to lunch with Gobbles and Hans Lada, and the tavern scene with Magneto and that SS guy. It doesn't take much for a quite moment to explode to a short but devistatingly violently end. Christoph Waltz just steals the damn movie, and now I hear he's going to play Blofeld, a great choice.

V for Vendetta - A very cathartic movie. Makes one want to rise up and start a revolution. But alas, I'm too lazy and set in my ways to try and make any waves bigger than bitching about stuff on the internet.

Guess I was in the mood for monologues.

Dragon Ball The Path to Power - Out of the four movies, this one is easily the best. It has a coherent story that doesn't feel rushed and is fleshed out. Unfortunately, it is still far from being issue free. The animation is nice, but Toriyama's designs have been utterly butchered, which is down right insulting. Oddly enough though, the movie is a re-imagining of the Red Ribbon Army saga, which is great since that is the best saga in the series, but it is strange that they did not follow the continuity of Mystical Adventure and do something with Piccolo. Also, the voice actor changes, especially for Roshi and Col Blue suck ass. Overall, I give it a 6.5/10

One Piece Film Z - This movie was utterly terrific. The story was well done and felt fleshed out. It is too bad that the normal filler the series has is not even a quarter as good as this movie was, as everything felt right. Well, almost. The movie did not have enough Franky, but other than that, I have very little to complain about. The battles were great and it was awesome getting a taste of the dub set in the New World, but to be honest, I expected the characters to sound a little bit older. Nami is the only one that sounded a bit different. Another thing that I was confused with is why Luffy's arms just suddenly turned black during his fight with Zed. It just seemed random and out of place as then they were back to normal without a moment's notice. Overall, if you are a One Piece fan, this movie is a must watch. Hell, even if you aren't, check it out as it might get you wanting to see more as it did with one of our friends who was over today. I give it an 8/10 stars. It is probably not as good as Strong World, but it is by far the second best One Piece movie thus far.

Child's Play 2 - The movie was not bad for a sequel. It had some really dumbass moments, and a few things that did not make sense, but otherwise, it could have been a lot worse. I'm going to give it a 6/10 since it was not better than the first one.

The Mist.

I don't even know what to say. I'm sure most of you have seen it already; if you have, you probably know why I'm at a loss for words.

Watched A Christmas Story while trimming the tree with the family, as is traditional. Now it's a Blu-Ray, but once upon a time it was an old VHS recording from TBS in 1992.

... I still kinda miss all those old commercials I rewatched year after year.

Watched Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever with my girlfriend the other night. For a Lifetime original movie it was pretty hilarious. Obviously Aubrey Plaza was what made it worth watching and it was very self referential. Like when the pets hear that the mall pet shop they live in might close down it show what would happen to Grumpy and it ends with a vet putting a gas mask over the cat's face to put her to sleep while Audrey Plaza screams, "No! No! Too dark!" before getting back to the light hearted movie. And it has a great line at the end about stereotypical Lifetime original movies as well that had me rolling.

It won't become a Christmas classic but it sure as hell beats most of the sappy dreck the Lifetime would put out around this time.

THe Hobbit 1 EE - A 7/10. Great movie, but it did not need to be 3 hours long.

Did some Christmas decorating with Die Hard and Home Alone in the background. Both are so damn good.

Later that night I had a hankering for some Jones, I blame watching Home Alone. And watched Raiders of the Lost Ark and Temple of Doom. God Raiders is still damn near perfect. Temple is still one of the wildest rides, and damn does Willie get annoying. Especially the dinner scene.

Watched Holy Motors last night. I was surprised that they sampled Ifukube's Godzilla theme.

I watched GvsMothra 92 tonight.

I....liked it. I don't really know how that happened.

Actually, I do.

I really dig Battra and I really like the slightly revamped Godzilla suit. He has a slightly slimmer face and it's ferocious. Granted, some of the SPFX are awful and the daylight sets are really bad, but the stuff at night works extremely well and I was entertained by the fights. This was not simply a beam fest - the fights had a little substance/grappling to them.

The story...well that is where this movie suffers. The Indiana Jones rip off scenes are insufferable, but somehow by the end of the film I looked past all of that because I enjoyed how Godzilla was portrayed.

The Mupper Xmas Carol - Really good movie, but as always, I just don't feel like Caine can do Scrooge justice. He just does not embody a selfish greedy prick all that well. Other than that, great movie. I'll give it an 8/10.

Curse of Chucky - This was actually not that bad. It was still kind of terrible, but it is certainly the best of the movies since the second one and it did a good job with pacing. I give it a 5/10.

Dumbo

Let me tell ya; Blu-Ray really shows off the mind blowing quality of Disney's animation at its peak. There's no replacement for building a large staff of people who are really, really, really good at something.
