Not trying to get too political.
But Bryan, I believe that people with problems should be put in a safe place where they can be treated and not harm the outside world. I think making all criminals live ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK isn't only cruel but downright inhumane. I think the shooter is a scumbag with a lot of serious problems, but I don't think he should die and I strongly believe he should be kept in a sheltered environment where he can't hurt others... He can rot in prison and get raped till the cows come home. Guys like that NEVER have it easy in prison. But I'm absolute FINE with my tax dollars going towards keeping guys like that in a sheltered facility where they can get treatment and get raped at the same time. I'll say it now, I'll GLADLY put my tax dollars towards that. If you disagree, fine, but don't bring up that point expecting it to change any minds (which is kind of the tone you took). There have only been two times that I heard about someone being executed and thought "GOOD"- Osama Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein. Now if the gunner does get killed (whether death penalty or murder by prisoner), I won't complain. I'm just not for capital execution... that being said, I won't weep whatsoever if he bites the dust.
And Eric, I agree to the extent that it sucks that there are people living in poverty, while this guy has SOME kind of roof over his head, but I honestly think that's relating two totally separate issues. Perhaps if our prison system wasn't insane and over flowing with people that shouldn't be there, we wouldn't have to worry as much. I'd love to see more help for the poverty stricken, but any time the government proposes something that would help the poor out more, they are accused of giving "handouts" and everything is shot down by the conservative side. Maybe its because I was raised to be extremely generous to the less fortunate around me in my personal life, but again, that's something I'd have no problem putting my tax money towards.
And Eric, I'm with you on gun control... make it harder for the crazies to get them, but don't outlaw them. Granted some countries have had a really low crime rate with guns being outlawed (like Japan for instance), we have to remember that those are other countries with different histories. The ship for gun control/gut outlaw in the US sailed a long time ago. The best thing we can do is keep a better grip on regulating who gets them and how.
