Saw the original 1963 The Haunting and sweet baked beans, this film is amazingly well done! I love it! There is so much atmosphere and while you don't really see anything "paranormal" beyond a few banging doors, mysterious footsteps; there isn't anything else to help initiate the scare. This film solely depended on the cinematography and atmosphere to convey the horror, and it worked!!!

The Rover- F*cking fantastic. Astounding performances by Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson, brilliant dialogue, great direction. A post apocalyptic Aussie exploitation movie in really classy dressing. I loved it. One of the best of the year.

RoboCop 2014 - Cards on the table, I enjoyed it. It's nowhere near the original, but there was never a chance it could be. But it's a decent sci-fi action movie about a cyborg cop and touches on the idea of free will. They end it in such a manner that made me fully ready for a Robocop 2, back in the silver suit with his badge etched into his chest. 80's RoboCop is a marinated steak from a charcoal grill, RoboCop 2014 is a steak cooked on an electric griddle. It's a shadow of it's previous version but it's pretty alright.

I've got a question for you guys that have seen the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Is it worth seeing in theaters? My local Alamo Drafthouse is showing it next month and we are trying to decide if we want to go see it or not.

I honestly think the Texas Chainsaw Massacre is boring, irritating, and overrated.

Despicable Me 2 - This movie turned out pretty well. I liked a lot of it better than the first one, but I felt the abundance of the Minions brought the movie down a peg to make it just a bit weaker than the first one. Yes, I know that might not make sense, but if you cut out a good 10 minutes away from the pointless minion scenes, this movie would be better than the first one as its jokes are funnier, more memorable, and its plot is better. Lucy was just awesome. However, because of the pointless Minion scenes, the movie is dragged down in a more childish manner that takes away from the over all story. I give the movie a 7/10 though, which is the same score I give the first one.

Transformers: Age of Extinction - Best Transformers movie Micheal Bay has made, take that as you will. The most visually coherent action scenes I've seen him direct in some time. I could make out what robot was what and what they were doing, it wasn't all up close shaky-cam bull crap. There were a few neat shots where the camera focused on something else while the action happened around it that were pretty neat. The annoying comic relief didn't grate on my nerves. There were no horrible crude jokes (Ball gag in 2, BumbleBee peeing on John Touturo in 1). I didn't wish to see the main cast die in horrible ways and actually kind of cared about their plight. And while I still can't remember if any of the other Autobots' names were mentioned the felt more like actual characters than the last three films.

BUT good gravy is this a loooooooooooooooooooong movie. I seriously think with little editing it could be actually made into two separate movies. It never felt like it was dragging but my body was getting restless by the final battle, wanting to get up and stretch a bit. I know some people will rage at the idea and name of the macguffin "transformium". And boy-oh boy is there BLATANT product placement. Seriously, after Marky Mark crashes a ship he yells at some dude and grabs a budlight from the truck they crushed and drinks it, there's at least two China specific product placement that are kept in the film. I'm sure it'll throw some people out of the movie but it's so bad that's goofy to me, and I'm fine with goofy.

Dinobot cameo is short but awesome.

Also had no idea John Goodman was in this as a Autobot, he was the best one.

One of my favorite foreign directors is Johnnie To. He typically does crime thrillers. Anyway just watched "Drug War" which wasn't as good as his Election films but holy cow the big shootout in this is probably one of the most brutal, chaotic and well shot action sequences I've seen in a while. Loved the Timmy character, the deaf brothers and the Captain undercover as Haha. The pacing is a slow start but it just keeps building as the plot gets deeper and deeper.

Edge of Tomorrow - I got dragged to this against my will but it was actually not a bad movie. It was kind of boring, but the characters were good and it was nice to see Tom Cruise not play a pompous know it all for a change. The alien creatures were kind of interesting and the concept, while not original, was well executed. The parts that were supposed to make you laugh did so and you did feel for the characters, even if the concept did ruin the stakes a bit. It isn't a movie I will ever care if I see again, but there are worse bays of movies out there to view at the moment. If you have already seen the best this summer has to offer (X-Men, Godzilla, Capt Am) you can't do wrong with this movie at all. I give it a 7/10.

Amazing Spider-Man 2 - Badly paced hot mess with some enjoyable moments, both legitimately enjoyable and campy/stupid enjoyment. Electro's introductory "theme" when in Times Square was brilliantly stupid. I still think he's too cool as Peter, but his Spider-man is pretty damn perfect, he just needs a better written movie. It was better than ASM1 but I'm not entirely sure if it's better than Spider-Man 3 or not, I might need another viewing or two.

One thing I do love better about Garfield's Parker is that he is actually shown to be a genius. They are showing him make web shooters. Showing him put his brain to use when it comes to figuring things out. The Parker in the Raimi movies did all of those off screen, if at all.

The Phantom Menace - All of this Star Wars talk has put me in the mood to rewatch the movies. Unfortunately, The Phantom Menace leaves a lot to be desired. The visuals, sound, and fight choreography are great, but once you move past them, this movie has very little substance. In fact, the movie moves so fast from one scene to the next there is no time to even enjoy the visuals. The characters are so dull and lifeless that the movie is just boring, and that is probably this movie's biggest issue. Jar Jar is beyond annoying, Anakin is a little brat you just want to spank, Padme is one dimensional, while Obiwan is just there because he needs to be in order to connect this movie with the original trilogy. Quigon is the only character that really does any thing at all, but he is just there to set up Obiwan. The sound editing in the pod race is down right incredible and the battle against Maul is fantastic. Unfortunately, Maul served absolutely no purpose. He has no character arc or anything other than to kill Quigon and then die himself. Come to think of it, aside from being boring, this movie has nothing to it. It is just made so they can make the next one instead of being able to hold its own without its sequels being there to pick up its slack. This movie sucks and I give it a 4/10.
