G.I Joe: Decent FX, servicible plot. Laughable execution for the most part.

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs-Entertaining enough for a second sequel.

Book of Eli-Not impressed. Nice take on an apocalyptic setting, but too slow moving...and really predictible.

James Cameron's Lawrence of Arabia Dances with the Last Samurai in 3-D

Overwrought message, flat dialogue and acting, but visually astounding.

The Howling: New Moon Rising

Awful, awful, awful, and that's just the generic country music soundtrack. Watch only for riffing or sadomasochistic purposes.

Way Out West

Another wonderful Laurel and Hardy film for some reason not avaliable commerically in the US right now (darn Brits with their Laurel and Hardy megaset encompassing everything they did!) - this one I rented from the public library btw, and a horribly colorized copy from the mid-'80s!

BUT.... it's a very funny little movie and I enjoyed it.

The Navigator

My second Buster Keaton film solidifies my suspicion that Buster Keaton just plain rocks. In this he plays a sheltered and naive rich kid who, along with a girl as sheltered and naive as him, is lot at sea on an drifting yatch.

HALO: Legends, which is an Animatrix-style take on the Halo Universe.

Now, I'm pretty much a n00b to Halo universe, so the first two features on the disc pretty much helped to lay it out for me.

Oddly enough, though, I have all the Halo soundtracks, (6 total as of now) and have seen trailers, and I don't play ANY games (just NO time or real interest, after being on a computer 12 hours a day).

The music is amazing, among the best soundtrack music I have heard for anything.

The quality of the various HALO: Legends videos varies, but they're all Anime style, along with some full-on CGI....just like the Animatrix.... so I guess your tolerance and love/hate of anime largely factors into this. I've read that some HALO fans are screaming bloody murder though, but that would be par for the course on something like this.

 I've got to get out and find me some Black Dynamite tonight.

I went to an advanced press screening of the Crazies remake last night. My god, this movie was abysmal. No, the original movie is no masterpiece, but it was a gutsy and honest horror oozing with creepiness and originality. The remake takes the basic premise and craps all over it until it dissolves into your typical Hollywood CGI-fest action-horror with a sugary happy ending (the gut wrenchingly tragic ending in the original film is the best part about it). The "Crazies" themselves are also a problem... the original had people who had almost a form of Alzheimers with violent tendencies... the remake can't make up its mind if the Crazies should be like they were in the original or if they should be rabid 28 Days Later knock off zombies... the movie isn't even consistent within itself. Also, they actually refer to them as "Crazies" in the remake, which had me giggling.

Someone please tell me how this makes sense... the original 70s flick from Romero is a good movie, but not perfect by any means. The acting is amateurish and the whole film is rough around the edges. Now give that movie a big budget remake. How come the 30+ year old original film is creepier, more original, and FAR more disturbing and ballsy than a 2010 remake? This remake has no excuse to NOT be better than the original. The remake of Last House On The Left is guilty of the same thing. The old, rather amateurish originals should be TAME AND LAME by today's standards, but they blow their remakes out of the water. How is it that in 2010, remakes of these daring original flicks from the 70s that had SO much to say with SO little money are so safe, tame and PC? How are these 30+ year old films EDGIER than the modern versions? Giving something a glossy sheen and WB television actors isn't making it better... it has to be a script and execution that can top the original... and watering it down and filling it with abysmal action scenes, shaky cam, and happy endings isn't topping the originals.

Oh well... the original is still in my DVD collection and I find it (along with Martin) to be Romero's most underrated work.... it still baffles me how the remake managed to fail like it did.

Oh, and one more thing... can we please STOP with the awful scores in horror movies today... you know the ones. They are filled with that constant screeching noise that builds up to a "BOO" moment. This movie has those about every 30 seconds. This movie also had the most hilarious way of dispatching a disposable side character EVER. Not to spoil it, but its the goofiest death you can imagine taking place in a carwash.

God what a bad movie. I can only imagine how that hack Breck Eisner is gonna butcher Cronenberg's amazing The Brood. Once again, I don't hate remakes... its just that they can't stop making bad ones. Save your money this weekend and see Shutter Island again for a quality horror flick.

Saw Percy Jackson and The Olympians. Not bad. As usual these days, more emphasis on special effects than on story and a few illogicial moments, but otherwise a nice diversion of a film. Luckily, I had not read any of the books this is supposed to be based on...so I had no "sucks compared to the book" vibe. Surprising amount of star power in this film. I'll give it a solid B.

I saw an indie movie at an advance screening tonight, called CATFISH. It's been getting a lot of buzz via Sundance, and it's a fascinating little movie about the friends and relations you make or THINK you make over the internet. Equal amounts of funny, a little creepy and ultimately sad.

It plays like a documentary, but if it's a mockumentary, well, then it's a pretty damn convincing one.
