In prep for Pacific Rim I watched several monster vs machine movies.
Godzilla X MechaGodzilla - I live the look of Kiryu and really wish they did more with the angle of the first Godzilla possessing the mech. The lead female back story is a bit too similar to the one in GxM for my tastes. At least the little kid keeps throughout the film instead of harboring the villain monster and then disappearing half way through the second act. I know Godzilla's head was of some "controversy", with a different design that was scrapped. I really wish there were photos of it, just to see what all the hub-bub was about. Overall a good film, if it tried to be more of a self contained movie and not just a set up for a battle royal in Tokyo SOS it'd be better.
Atlantic Rim - Asylum, why do I keep watching your painfully horrid movies? (Probably the same reason I watch AvP every now and again) Graham Green barely moves his neck and is set to bored and annoyed. I completely lost it when Green Ranger, or whatever the black dude's name was, is searching for a random guy's little girl with his gun drawn and ready to fire. They at least created an original monster instead of reusing the CG creatures from their previous films. This film is stupid but fun to point and laugh at.
Atragon - This movie has the wildest first five minutes of any Toho monster movie I've seen. I had to double check that I was watching the right movie. I really like the themes of patriotism and nationalism in this flick. Manda didn't really get much screen time, nor did it pose much of a threat to Atragon/Goten-go. Although the Mu back story never really set well with me. "We're this highly advanced nation/race/whatever and we rule the world. Hey look our main continent is sinking into the ocean, think we should take over one of the other continents with the uncivilized tribes live on? No? Just adapt to living underwater? Alright." And the fact nothing but their technology has advanced beyond pre-bronze age was just wild to me. Togas and advanced 60’s computer consoles, that's something I'd like to see in a modern movie.
King Kong Escapes – Alright, I just have to say that I didn’t see this until the end, had to shut it off ten/fifteen minutes early to make it to Pacific Rim. But my god Amamoto’s teeth were haunting. I wanted a clearer shot of them while also not wanting to see them at all. But he owns it as the villainous Doctor Who, and his silver backed cape is just too damn stylish. And his hair? Perfect! And I don’t remember Kong having that many fangs. And the Kong suits show why most kaiju aren’t fully fur clad, because when he jumps in the water, yikes! As I said I still have to see the final fight, but so far it was a fun little romp with the brother of the dude from This Island Earth and the blond chick who every now and again looks like Sarah Silverman.
Pacific Rim – Aces. From start to finish I loved this movie. It isn’t perfect, but few movies are. It’s a big summer movie that’s about Mechs and Monsters and revels in it. I was worried that Charlie Day would be too Charlie for me to see anything else, but he really makes a great manic scientist. And the play off between him and Gorman’s numbers and theory guy is fantastic, I’d watch a DTV, or series of shorts about them. Some of the universal gripes I agree with but they don’t deter my love of the movie. More day time fights, more varied textures to the monsters. But I really wish we got to know the other pilots better. The Russians looked cool as hell, especially their face masks. And I really would have like some better understanding or showing off of the Thundercloud technique of the Chinese triplets. I just wanted more of that world before the movie ended. I haven’t seen it since its release but I plan to catch it several more times. A friend said this about the movie’s financial aspects, “It’ll only make twenty bucks, but fans for life.â€
