I haven't been able to watch as much as I wanted to, but I've done some catching up in the last few days. List of stuff I've watched in the last few days:
-Pumpkinhead- Believe it or not, I actually never saw this before. Well, now I have and I thought it was awesome! Great effects, original story, awesome creature... what more could you want from a horror movie? Too bad Stan Winston never made any more horror movies. Also, Lance Hendrickson is so convincing in the lead role... he really is an awesome actor. its too bad nobody else seems to notice and he shows up in Asylum mockbusters and SyFy originals now. I was glad when Ed Harris cast him in Appaloosa.
-Devil Doll- An obscure flick by the great and underrated Tod Browning, director of Dracula and Freaks. Unfortunately I didn't really care much for this one. It lacks the same kind of powerful story and interesting characters that were in Dracula and Freaks. And the main character spends the whole time in drag using a fake old lady voice, but it fools everyone in the movie.
-Bedlam- Now this is more like it! A movie produced by the great Val Lewton (look him up, kids). Boris Karloff is at his best here. He plays an abusive asylum owner and he's just such a mean b*stard. If you don't know the name Val Lewton or his films (Cat People, Body Snatcher, etc) you REALLY need to change that. Some of the best horror of the 30s/40s.
-The Old Dark House- An overlooked gem from Universal and the master James Whale. It could be said that this started the whole "broke down in the middle of nowhere" genre of horror.
-Monster Squad- A childhood favorite! Forget Van Helsing, this is a REAL Universal monster reunion. I've loved this movie since I was 7.
-The Creature From The Black Lagoon- Another old favorite. Great creature, a cool spin on the King Kong story of woman and beast... a classic all around!
-Hellraiser III: Hell On Earth- This movie sucks and the old Cenobites are replaced by lame new ones. Stick with the wonderful original film and the first sequel and forget the rest.
-The Haunted World of El Superbeasto- Although I didn't find it unbearable like jellydonut did, its a pretty forgettable film. Unfortunately the opening credits are the best part. Its good for a few chuckles and I'd be lying if I said it never made me laugh... thing is, its not a movie I could ever see myself wanting to watch again. I was mildly entertained. It took up time and space, it had a beginning and a middle and an end... it was just there. I do love the idea of a universe where all movie monsters co-exist together. I'd still take it over Rob Zombie's Halloween movies.
I think that's it for now.
