Samurai I: Musashi Miyamoto

Watching this a second time, and knowing what I was getting into (i.e.: not a lot of actual samurai stuff in this first installment), I enjoyed it a lot more. It's a very beautiful film. It seems TCM got Criterion's new Blu-Ray version. Their old version (which I watched a year ago) looked like butt.

Sadly, from what I saw of the second film it looks like they got the old copy of that one (that looks like butt). Even so, recorded the second two and look forward to watching 'em.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

WOW, talk about a good movie! I did feel its pace was a little too fast at times, but it was good and I loved every minute of it.

 On a side note, it feels like today was Swedish day for me. Went to Ikea (which is Sweden), had a Swedish dinner, then this movie. I did however find it interesting how there was so much product placement in this movie, but it ain't of a bother.

This image I made sums up my thoughts:

Image

The movie was down right awful. It did not feel like a Bourne movie at all, there way too many scene changes going on in the first hour, absolutely no suspense, and worst of all, it was just down right boring. The music to the movie sucked ass, especially disappointing since the music to the previous movies was great and always fit with the mood. It insults everyone's intelligence and it was clearly some other crappy movie they decided to just throw into the Bourne universe just to make money. Go see The Dark Knight Rises again instead.

So today, a few Arizonian G-Fans and I got together and had a BBQ and watched, talked, and bought Godzilla! :D We ended up seeing The Return of Godzilla (1984) and it almost felt like a first time experience. I don't recall the movie at all, but I ended up loving it so much! The ending, however, I feel was a tad less emotional than the 1985 version (sue me :P ). Didn't spawn any new figures right now (but I will soon).

Samurai II: Duel at Ichijoji Temple

In the second installment we get into the actual samurai-type stuff, which I like very much, but the B plot (the love triangle) grows tiresome. I think that the girls who work in the geisha house that Musashi hides out in in this film were far more lively and likable then the main female characters!

Double Wedding

Back to my Myrna Loy & William Powell set. After two servicable but unremarkable melodramas we get to the good stuff: romantic comedy, a Hollywood genre that used to be really really good and consistently featured some of the best directors and writers and actors (giving some of their best performances, too) !

This film has Loy as the uptight control freak with no joy in her life and Powell as the 'manic pixie dream ...40-year-old-guy' (eat your heart out Zooey Deschanel) who lives a bohemian lifestyle and, after a rocky start, gradually wins her heart. Some good character actors in supporting parts, too.
