I Saw the Devil - really good. probably the best movie of its type I've EVER seen. it's like a more realistic, down to earth, emotinally invested version of something like Devil's Rejects or Law Abiding Citizen.

I could have done without some of the overly graphic stuff (like slitting the achiles heel), but it's very rare for me to watch a movie that runs over 2 hrs and think that every single instant and every single scene is worthwhile and needs to be there. this movie may be a touch on the long side, but it never once lost my interest.

fantastic.

John Carter.

I went in with reservations, hoping that Disney didn't destroy Burroughs' excellent characters and adventures. I must say-- IT WAS GOOD! The story builds a bit slowly at first--but, oh how it builds! The world of Barsoom is very rich in detail and culture. Absolutely immersive.

The story is fun, and at times surprisingly moving. There is action, romance, a sprinkle of comedy. Really just a great, well rounded epic of a film. RECOMMENDED! :)

50/50 - Decent flick where Gordon Lewis Levitt (or whatever his name is) finds out he has cancer. I liked that it portrayed people's reaction to it in a realistic way, instead of the schmaltzy Hollywood script you usually get with these type of movies.

Tucker And Dale vs. Evil - This movie was "OH GODZILLA! WHAT TERRIBLE LANGUAGE!" hilarious. Starts off as standard horror in the woods premise but soon abandons the clichés to becomes it's own film and is really, really damn funny! The death scenes were great, my favorite being the tree trunk and what happens to the sheriff.

Restless - Gus Van Sant film about a depressed teenager who spends his time hanging out at funerals . He meets a cool girl who happens to be dying of Cancer and she helps him to deal with his past and learn to enjoy life again. This worst part of it was the main character, who was annoying, pretentious and predictable. This is basically a modern version of Harold & Maude. It doesn't add anything new to the premise.

Take Shelter - Very good film about a man who suddenly finds himself having bad dreams about an impending storm and people trying to hurt him and his family. This causes him to become increasingly paranoid and distrustful of others around him, and fearful that he may be experiencing a psychotic breakdown (his mother is diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia). It's a sad, realistic portrait of someone experiencing mental illness, though the end leaves you wondering if indeed that's the case or not.

Valley Girl excellent movie! One of the better teenage love story movies from the eighties I have ever seen. Was listening to a Kevin Smith podcast about this movie and was sold on the idea of watching this movie and I'm gald that I did. To me this movie feels like it does a nice job of showing the turmoil of growing up from the women's perspective what with peer pressure from friends and boys attempts to manipulate them. EG Daily does some good subtle acting portraying a character who has had a guilt trip layed on her by her best friends ex-boyfriend in order to mainipulate her into not talking about his actions with her. Nic Cage as lovelorn Randy also very good. Great soundtrack? Yes, yes it is.

Crank- WTF?! How did this movie elude me for so long. I've had plenty of people tell me I should see this, but I plainly didn't believe them. It looked like just another machismo action flick like any other Jason Statham movie. I was with a group of friends who wanted to watch it and I begrudgingly agreed with my mind made up that I would hate it. Boy, was I wrong. Nobody told me it was a very UN-Hollywood screwball comedy! It actually felt very Japanese to me, especially the randomness of the humor (for example, the main villain inexplicably has women in plastic balls hanging off the roof of his headquarters and not a line is mentioned about this. I LOVE THAT.) This was like Takashi Miike got a chance to direct a Statham movie. It had this overall WEIRD and random feel to it that just IS NOT in American films, and honestly reminded me more of Ichi the Killer or the Zebraman films or something than The Transporter. This movie was a big goofy, fun ball of WTF. These directors should make more things like this instead of more serious films like Gamer or franchise flicks like Ghost Rider (I'd love for them to make a Piranha movie, for example). They had a really good thing going with this.

The Thing

The latest "prequel/remake". I don't really care what people say, it seemed to me that the film was just a PG-13 remake claimed to be a prequel. There were a few scenes almost exactly relevant to the 1982 classic. In my opinion, this film was just okay. The score was satisfactory, the actors were okay. I think the actor who portrayed the character, Lars, was perhaps the actor I most liked in the film next to Mrs. Scott Pilgrim. The film lacked the "horror" of the first original from Carpenter. It had suspense, though. The atmosphere of the film was filled with it. Yet scene after scene, all I saw were characters who were almost identical to the original in both appearance and persona. Overall, the film's re-watchable value is pretty low in my opinion, and I'd chose Carpenter's film all the time when compared to this.

Basically, it was an "okay" film. I'm not saying I didn't enjoy it or thought it was a flop, its just the whole time I was watching this, I dearly missed the horror aspect of Carpenter's film.

Overall rating: 3/5

Hugo

Not many films have won me over as of recent as much as this one. The guys at Paramount really helped produce a treasure of a film and gave us a true story depicting the life of Georges Méliès; one of the most earliest filmmakers from the early 1900s. The score of the film was so enchantingly beautiful yet at the same time, so haunting. Just listening to the score by itself could warm the heart and chill the spine. Howard Shore just did a fantastic job on composing, dare I say, a masterpiece. The actors were astonishingly portrayed well, and Ben Kingsley was as great as always. You felt for the characters in the film, which is definitely one of the biggest positives for this film. This film was amazing, and I definitely recommend it!

Not bad. I don't love this film. It starts very slow and it takes a while to figure out where exactly the film is going. My favorite thing about the film actually is some of it's visuals which feel like nice throw-backs to the silent era. In the end, the film isn't offensively bad, or mind-blowingly awesome..it's just kind of there. I didn't really care about any of the characters in this film. The male lead was kind of boring, child actor or no.

Oh, and this film DID NOT have better spfx than Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Rubbish that Oscar win, straight rubbish.
