The Raven (1963)- Watched this for Vincent Price Day. Roger Corman's horror comedy staring Vincent Price, Boris Karloff, Jack Nicholson and Peter Lorre, loosely based on the Poe story. What's not to love?

Super Inframan- How could anybody not have fun with this crazy, nonsensical flick? Simply too fun and ridiculous for its own good. Me and my friends have "bad movie nights" and I brought this movie and everyone loved it. Simply an awesome flick.

House on Haunted Hill (live Rifftrax show)- The MST3K guys were hilarious and House on Haunted Hill is still an awesome movie. For a William Castle movie, its very well thought out. Castle + Vincent Price is always a winning combo. Unfortunately they showed the colorized version.

Finally made it through last weekends block of Hammer horror from TCM:

X The Unknown- A pretty cool killer blob movie that predates Caltiki, The Blob, and the H-Man. I liked it.

Five Million Years To Earth (aka Quatermass and the Pit)- I was unprepared for how awesome this movie was. A truly original and unsettling sci-fi/horror that questions the origins of religion and the human race. One of the best Hammer flicks I've seen.

These Are The Damned- Another home run! A very original concept pulled off extremely well. I love the mix of genres here: biker flick, sci-fi, and horror. This movie is incredibly bleak and depressing but its awesome.

Stranglers of Bombay- Another interesting mix of genres (adventure/mystery/horror) that works. A crazy Indian cult that kills people by strangling them? A mongoose fighting a cobra? Awesome.

^ Those classic Treehouse of Horror specials were great. ToHV is (IMHO) the best one.

Anyway, I'm continuing on in my personal Alien marathon and got around to watching Alien 3 (the Assembly Cut). And while the A.C. beats out the Theatrical version, I still don't like this movie. Maybe it's the way they carelessly offed Newt, Hicks, and Bishop in the beginning. Maybe it's the fact that, given the ending of the magnificent Aliens, this entire movie shouldn't have happened. Maybe it's just that the film itself is a gigantic step down from the quality of the first two Alien films.

Whatever it is, I just can't bring myself to appreciate this film's finer points and enjoy the it, which I suppose is a real shame. Objectively speaking, it's not a terrible movie by any means and it works as an ending to the original two as opposed to Resurrection, which is a perfect example of how low the franchise can sink.

Onibaba. Watched this one for Halloween via Netflix. Quite interesting and atmospheric, but not really my cup of tea when all is said and done.

Hereafter. A remarkably well-done and thought-provoking film. This was one of the best movies I've seen in a long time, and without doubt one of Eastwood's best pictures as a director.

EDIT: 1,000th post!

Stuff I watched for Halloween:

Mad Monster Party- Stop motion Rankin Bass feature with all the classic monsters and the voice of Boris Karloff. What's not to love? Its kinda sad that this isn't as popular as their Christmas specials.

Dead Alive- My favorite Peter Jackson film and one of the goriest/funniest movies ever made. Along with Shaun of the Dead, its THE essential "zomedy." I know Jackson has talked about returning to low budget splatter films... I just hope he does it. Come on, Pete! Nobody cares about TinTin. Once the Hobbit is finished, give us another splatter classic.

Evil Dead- STILL one of the best horror films of all time. Scary, atmospheric, and full of extremely black comedy.

Suspiria- There's tons of amazing Italian horror films, but this is my favorite. And Goblin's score is simply jaw dropping.

Pontypool- One of the best horror films of the last decade, IMO. Truly original and creepy without showing the viewer a damn thing. Its one of those films that leaves it up to your imagination, almost making the audience trick themselves into being scared. I hope they get rolling on the sequels soon.

The Human Centipede- SURPRISINGLY well made film that had no reason to be as good as it is. Probably the most SUSPENSEFUL film I've seen all year. Like Pontypool, it preys on the viewer's imagination. Good stuff, even if I almost feel kinda bad for liking it as much as I did.

Escanaba in da Moonlight- You have to be a Michigander and especially around this time of year to apperciate this indy comedy about a 43 year old hunter played by Jeff Daniels who hasn't shot a single deer in his entire life. What's grreat about this is I've actually been to the city and areas this was filmed at. My uncle has a cabin not to far from this movie. I suggest checking it out.

Avatar - once the awe of seeing it on the big screen wears off, it becomes STARTLING how absolutely, completely, horribly UNORIGINAL this movie is...not only in the stock characters and cliched story, but if you pay attention, you'll hear lifted pieces of soundtrack (I can distinctly hear chunks of the Aliens soundtrack in there) and sound effects from Jurassic Park (the horse-things make raptor noises and some of the other animals make T-rex sounds) and even the King Kong/Gamera the Brave stock roar...

pretty much the only thing James Cameron proved with this movie is that he watches a lot of movies himself...
