The Texas Chainsaw Massacre - tough to say anything new about this, but that gritty look and feel and the very subdued score really heighten the feeling of realism and make for a very effective film.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 - there are things i like and things i don't like...i like the insanity, i like a lot of the characters, i like the black humor (ties into the insanity a little more), i don't like the attempts at straightforward comedy. parts of this movie feel too much like Tobe Hooper trying to emulate Frank Henenlotter. I don't hate that, as I enjoy movies like Basket Case, but it doesn't feel like a Hooper film....one thing I like is that rather than trying to one-up the original or repeat it, they just go in a totally different direction.
Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III - and now the TCM series commits a mistake of the F13 series...basically doing remakes instead of sequels. there are things that are kinda neat here, especially if you look at this as a remake rather than a sequel...but it's too polished, and simultaneously too hokey.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation - Matthew McConaughey is pretty great...i appreciate that this movie does something different, but like any movie that does something different with a tired idea, i want it to make sense, and this doesn't.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2003 - it's kinda tough to PINPOINT where this goes wrong, unlike say, Rob Zombie's Halloween remake, but I think that's PART of what makes this worse...there isn't any one failing, there are dozens. Honestly, none of them are THAT huge, but added up, they make for a fairly monumental failure. R. Lee Ermey is great, and i don't mind the "Leatherface has a skin condition" thing, but the entire movie devolves into just one giant chase scene...which sucks.
i really don't get why this is even called a remake, there's no dinner scene, multiple added characters, subplots that didn't exist in the original...this is more of a remake of the third film...

i haven't watched the prequel yet, but i can fairly confidently say that if the 4th film wasn't as bad as it is, these movies could be ranked for quality in order of release date. the 4th film is slightly worse than the remake though...

Leprechaun 6 Back to tha Hood - **** me....

Hellraiser - thank GOD for this movie. saved my sanity
Hellbound: Hellraiser 2 - another good entry for Hellraiser. There are a couple weird things here and there, but honestly, it all kinda fits the Hellraiser universe...
Hellraiser 3: Hell on Earth - It's not as terrible as I've heard, but it doesn't really feel like a totally proper film either. a little boring and the new cenobites are too hokey, but it's not THAT bad.
Hellraiser 4: Bloodlines - pretty bad. It took Jason 10 films to get to outer space, and hellraiser went there in four...there are some semi-neat ideas, but it doesn't feel like a hellraiser movie without sacrificing someone somewhere for a blood offering.
Hellraiser 5: Inferno - probably the last film of the series to even remotely have its head screwed on correctly. Again, it doesn't feel like a Hellraiser film without the blood sacrifice thing, but at least this one tried something kinda different. the pulp-detective thing doesn't quite work though, a little too cheesy.
Hellraiser 6: Hellseeker - unfortunately takes its cue from the fifth film and offers up just a vague rehash of its ideas...they tried to bring it full-circle with bringing back the Kirsty character, but since they do nothing good with it, it's a terrible film.
Hellraiser 7: Deader - what the **** is this?
Hellraiser 8: Hellworld - honestly, could have been one of the better films since part 2 (that's how bad most of those movies are) but the twist at the end is the dumbest thing i think i've seen in a horror film this month, and i've watched like 40 other films...
Hellraiser Revelations - makes all the other films look like masterpieces...the decision to show pinhead when he's not being summoned is HORRIBLE...he just sits around waiting, apparently. he talks way too much, and while i get that eventually you have to move on from Doug Bradley, this new guy is pretty awful.

The worst thing about Hellraiser is that each consecutive film is actually worse than the one before it. Possible exception being that 5 might be slightly better than 4...but honestly, each new film plumbs further depths of shame for a once-great series of films.
The biggest problem of all, though is that after part 3, there isn't a single film until the absolutely ATROCIOUS Revelations that makes use of the whole "blood bringing someone back from Pinhead's world" thing...that's one of the things that made hellraiser what it was...without it, many of those sequels don't even feel like hellraiser films at all.

OH I also watched Candyman 1 and 2 over the weekend.

Candyman - a weird, dark, somewhat depressing, but awesome movie. the music and atmosphere are great.

Candyman 2 - it's alright. not as good as the first, but it works ok.

Got some in this weekend:

Sinister- An above average haunted house movie. It avoids a lot of the normal cliches (ie we're given a reason why they won't move out of the house) and offers some interesting angles on the genre. Its basically the movie that would tell you about the dude that finds the footage to all those found footage movies. Pretty clever stuff, although there were some directorial choices that bothered me and seemed too cliched and hackneyed (jump scares, showing a wee bit too much of the ghost, the ghost looking like a member of Slipknot, etc). But all in all, a really solid flick. The dialogue is smart and the acting is great (Ethan Hawke was fantastic). Also, all the Super 8 film that Hawke's character sifts through is truly chilling stuff... stuff that nightmares are made of, honestly. I recommend it! It felt good to see a GOOD horror movie in the theaters again this time of year.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre- The original of course. Dirty, grimey perfection.

The Exorcist- Classy, Satanic perfection.

Halloween
- Spooky perfection.

(for real, those three films are among my favorite films ever made... all perfect horror films, all for very different reasons).

Candyman 3 - blah. (a) what happened to the score? (b) how did they bring candyman back? (c) why should I care? This movie isn't necessarily terrible, but it's a terrible letdown compared to the first two.

Psycho
- i really like this movie, but it feels just a touch long...but once Anthony Perkins shows up things are great.
Psycho II - surprisingly not that bad. the ending kinda sucks, and some stuff is a little convoluted and unexplained, but it's a pretty solid sequel to such a great film
Psycho III - actually pretty good. I think it's really interesting that Perkins directed this. he obviously had some ideas (good ones) on what to do with Norman's character.
Psycho IV: The Beginning - pretty bad. i can infer from what i've seen in the films thus far that Norman had an awkward upbringing and was probably at least a little bit sexually repressed...i don't need to see it.
Psycho 1998 - what's the point of this? it fails as a shot-for-shot remake because it ISN'T shot-for-shot with some little things being inserted here and there (weird images flashing whenever Norman kills, Norman masturbating...ugh), and it fails as a reinterpretation because it doesn't change anything significant at all. in short, it fails.
