Man, that's a real shame. Hashimoto did a real good job with The Return of Godzilla. I shall follow Misty's example and watch the movie again in his honor.

Met him once; very nice gentleman. Unfortunately, he never got to direct his films without studio interference -- he always said that he had his hands tied on both GODZILLA 1984 and SAYONARA JUPITER... He was not very happy with these films. There was much talk of him directing GODZILLA VS. KING GHIDORAH (1991), but studio politics put an end to that.

He will be missed.

For creating a great quality movie in that year with great realisms, scares, a powerful Godzilla, cool and realistic effects which I'm sure he demanded, and dedication.... I salute you and say rest in peace my friend. :(

I could only wonder what "Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah" would have been with his direction and his watch over the special effects director.

Godbless and be cool!

A new report of Koji Hashimoto's death has appeared on Mobius and it claims it was the result of a climbing accidnet. Which is the real cause?

KOJI HASHIMOTO Died Jan. 9, 2004

Japanese director Koji Hashimoto died of from injuries sustained in a
fall while mountain climbing at age 68. Mr. Hashimoto directed the 1984
remake of "Godzilla." He also directed the sci-fi film "Sayonara
Jupiter." For most of his career, Mr. Hashimoto was an assistant
director. He worked on many of Toho Studio's monster movies. The
second movie I ever saw in a theater was "King Kong vs. Godzilla." Mr.
Hashimoto began his AD career working on that epic monster battle. Mr.
Hashimoto's other AD credits include "Gihidra: The Three-Headed
Monster," "Frankenstein Conquers the World," "Monster Zero," "Atragon
2," "Godzilla's Revenge" and "Tidal Wave." Mr. Hashimoto's work
wasn't restricted to giant rubber monsters. He was Akira Kurosawa's
AD on "Dodes'ka-den."

Ian, I do remember the crappy translation I read saying something about a mountain but it was towards the end while the cardiac was mentioned at the beginning. Maybe he had cardiac arrest while recoveringe from the injuries from the mountain fall?
