Why is Godzilla vs Destroyah so highly rated?

I know I am opening a can of worms here, but I want to know why Godzilla vs Destroyah is so loved? What is it about the movie you like so much? What draws you to it? I am not looking for a bunch of, "cause it's cool man", post. I want to hear what makes it one of people favorite Heisei movies, and one of the best Godzilla movies of all time.

My History with Goji vs Desu
I was so looking forward to the movie when it was announced, I got a tape copy and throw it in with a bunch of friends. Once it was done I took the tape out and said I would never put it back in. Later the subtitled version came out and I decided to give it another shot, same result I couldn't get into the movie. Many years later the dubbed version was released on DVD and I watched it with some friends, and I still had no love for this movie. However I will give it one more shot, I will listen to what people say and try to see what they see in the film. Give it a fair shake, try watching it with a new apprehension for the film.

So please explain away.

I liked the movie a lot but in this one I was actually telling myself while I was watching "I really hope he doesn't die". Even though I knew he was going to die in the back of my mind I was hoping he wouldn't. So I had (and still have) that emotional attachment to Godzilla (I grew up watching him) and seeing him have such a messed up yet noble death was very touching.

Now as for the merits of the movie itself -it's flawed. Not horribly flawed but I think GvD in particular would have benefited from a longer shooting schedule. They tried some nice things but came off a little off. I don't think the movie was very polished. It had a great Kaiju in Destoroyah with a great origin. Him having multiple forms was a great touch and actually brough the kaiju menace down to human size. He actually attacked human beings and it added a nice level of intensity. Yeah it did rip from ALIENS heavily but hey that's how she goes. I personally LOVED the scene where the remaining Destoroyah was melting and the music got all slow and he was surrounded by flames and his eyes were slowly dimming. To me that had "THE THING" written all over it (I'm a HUGE, HUGE John Carpenter Fan so I really got a kick out of that) and even the music in that scene reminded me of it. Speaking of the score to me it was Ifukube's best work. From the get go the thunderous score of Godzilla in Hong Kong was incredible. It really set the tone for what was to come.

I like this movie a lot. Don’t get me wrong I know this movie has flaws to the point that I can’t with all good conscious defend them but I think the end product was a fun movie that served its purpose and a movie that had a great ending.

G vs. Biollante is highly rated? Apart from the fact that Biollante is an exceptional kaiju (never bettered as an original kaiju since, IMHO) I don´t really understand why. I found it a pretty slow moving film.

G vs. Destroyah is another thing entirely. This is my fave from the Heisei series, possibly my fave G of all and I rank it highly among all Kaiju movies, generally. In brief:

1. Good pacing and performances
2. Good plot
3. The origins of Destroyah - original (albeit implausible, but who cares?!)
4. LOVE those mini and midi Destroyahs! Great design, original and scary
5. Finally a Godzilla progeny that doesn´t look like the Pillsbury doughboy
6. The "meltdown" concept
7. G jr. vs. Midi-Destroyah battle.
8. SFX top notch
9. The ending - wonderfully filmed, touching, evocative.

Downsides? Yeah a couple. The maxi- Destroyah (final mutation) I found disappointing and considering how powerful it was supposed to be, died much too easily at the hands of the humans... but other than that this is great entertainment.
