Monster Zero x SciFi Japan - Archive Only

For me this was a great flick that really moved the series forward in the right direction. It was fun, exciting and everything I wanted from a modern Godzilla movie. It had the introduction of Junior, Mechagodzilla and Rodan! It’s not a perfect movie by any means and it does have its mistakes but they are not glaring mistakes like GvKG. Anyway I enjoyed it a lot (not to mention I like Godzilla’s look. He looks less like a HGH user and looks more natural and of course has the smaller head. Sweet design!). The soudtrack was fab and well Mechagodzilla's theme is pretty bad ass.

It would be my favorite in the Heisei series if it weren’t for Destoroyah. Destoroyah just edges it out for me.

Anyway, lets share some thoughts on it!

This is a mid-range film in my book. It was decent, not great but not trash either (GvsM '92 is the worst of the Heisei Series). Liked the idea Rodan was included but he could have been done with more respect and honor. The G-suit in this movie isn't a fav of mine either (GvsKG had the best suit of the Series to me). Also this film really put the high note on beam wars too. I rather have a bad guy MG then a good guy MG. I liked the score though....that's about it...oh and this is 1 of those highly overrated films

I too was "middle of the road" on this movie until I saw it on the big screen at AFFE 2. Really changed my opinion of this movie....

Although I like Kiryu's design better, and the original MechaGodzilla will always have a place on my shelf, I thought Heisei MG was handled fairly well. The SuperMechaGodzilla mode was a fun nod to the otaku mania for modular robots. Plus, the reliance on distance weapons was logical and effective.

Consider what Godzilla is: a gigantic humanoid dragon with a radioactive body and supernatural strength. It also has a tremendously powerful "breath" weapon. Nobody sane would want to get close to that.
Instead, MG was designed around a ranged attack paradigm, with an armor system that followed up on the Fire Mirror by absorbing the heat ray and powering an accurate weapon, rather than merely splashing it around like S-X II did. The missiles and G-Crusher system were sensible systems as well. In terms of the Miki character, the experience of having been forced into maiming Godzilla was an important step towards ultimate sympathy for the beast.

Had G-Force built another SuperMechaGodzilla instead of wasting effort on Gophera, I've no doubt that the Heisei series would've ended before Destroyah. So, maybe it's a good thing they didn't, but SMG was still a high point in the Heisei plotline(s).

I liked the film, overall. It took a popular story line and foe and brought it up to a 90s pace. 'Twas a good idea. Especially like the music, some of the best stuff from the series to date. My minor irritations with the movie stemmed from the terminology of the weapons. Now, i understand they can call them any darn thing they please, but when i think of 'grenades', i think more of a projectile weapon than a beam. And what the hell is a 'mega buster'? Mental picture of a large, projectile fist that can be launched from the wrist.

In the Japanese version of this film the pilots speak (HEAVILY ACCENTED) English while flying Mechagodzilla.

In a similar situation in the Cerasini Godzilla vs. the Robot Monsters novel. the author claims this is because English is the international aviation language and that all Japanese pilots (and, theoretically I suppose, pilots all over the world) speak English while in the air.

Does anyone know if this is true? And if so, how far does it extend? Do only Government flights have to learn and speak in English, or commercial flights as well?
