Well Toho's shooting schedules in the 60s were even more insane and they still managed to look a lot better than most of what Kawakita churned out in the 90s. Besides, I doubt Daiei could afford to be THAT much more lax about their shoots for it to make that much of a difference. More days of shooting INCREASES a budget anyway.

I've heard off-hand remarks from several people here about his alleged drinking problem. I don't know particulars and I think it's all a bit too personal, so I'm not really interested in knowing any more, but I assume(!) it's probably true.

Ed Holland and I visited Kawakita last year and he seemed fine. He runs his own company called Dream Planet Japan Inc (http://www.dreamplanet-j.co.jp) which produces FX for TV and commercials. I think they do a lot of merchandising goods too, but I don't really know.

It's kind of moot to talk about Gamera 3 since GOTU alone blows everything in the Heisei Godzilla movies out of the water.

He must have been a drinker. I just read that he died earlier this month due to liver failure. Why hasn't then been reported on SFJ?

I know I'm digging up a VERY old thread,but I have to say that I'm a big fan of the heisei series and they're my favorite special effects. Yes a lot of that is remembering "wow new Godzilla!" But a lot of it is that the SFX just have a certain "charm."

I admit, I really do like the visual effects (beams & whatnot) in the Heisei films. I just wish the practical effects they complimented were a lot better.
