Well, it really doesn't. I mean, who were you talking to who said GvsKG stood above the rest? It's always been my understanding that most people regard it as having decent monster action but a terrible script.

I beleive the question should be "Why does everyone like Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla'93?" Ba-Da-BAA! (Sorry, I couldn't help myself :D )

This is one of my fav.Heisei films.Yes,the plot ties itself in knots but I still admire Toho for tackling such a complex story in the first place, and I love some of the ideas such as the Godzillasaurus on Lagos Island. There is probably more sheer destruction and all-out spectacle than any other Heisei films and after the first 1/2 hour the action doesnot stop for a minute. The climactic Mecha-King Ghidorah battle is easily the best climax to a Heisei film, and I think the scene when the old commander is in the skyscraper and is confronted and then killed by Godzilla is awesome and oddly moving.Ifikube's score is terrific even if it is largely rehashes of earlier music he wrote, and most of the human characters are good too.Yes,the Terminator 2 ripoff and the western actors are crap, but otherwise i think this is a really good G film, but I'm probably on my own.....

It seems obvious that everyone doesn't like vKG. I thought it was a good G movie myself, but then as long as it has the big G in it the movie is going to be alright with me.

The thematic stuff I find really interesting- basically all the material that some idiot pundits interpreted as "anti-American", is actually rather ambiguous. It deals with stuff like nationalism and imperialism in an almost metaphorical way- one of the honored war veterans who helped rebuild Japan's economy also is responsible for the sub accident that creates the bigger, meaner Godzilla that starts destroying Japan.

Seeing the subtitled version really helps- the dub is perhaps the single worst I've ever heard for a Godzilla film, and it misses some nuances of the dialogue.

For me, the best part of GvsKG was the Dorats. I want some.

I was disappointed with the Ghidorah. The new head design was too bland for my tastes. The overall execution of movement was good, though.
Does anyone else listen to Kajagoogoo's "Too Shy" and think of "Save the Earth?"

The first time I heard about GvsKG was in the third issue of Markalite magazine. They had a nice writeup on the story and the part with Ghidorah vs the F-15's really got my imagination going. Then, when I finally saw the film[original Japanese not dubbed] I was VERY disappointed with the flying scenes. IMO they looked not that different from his flying scenes from Godzilla vs Gigan.[obvious scenes of camera panning around static model, little wing movement, He flew WAY to slow, etc.] I also was very disappointed in the audio mix. The scenes where Ghidorah first attacks sounded like thier were only 5 or 6 people in the whole city. And the music where Godzillasaurus battles the army just didn't fit IMO. While there were some effects scenes I really did like, the Dorats, the running android scenes, and the aformentioned beefs really kept me from enjoying this movie. I was hoping for so much more.
