^Mainly because the filmmakers tried to do something different with Godzilla and actually push the envelope with their production values. Plus, the story was fairly original and the main stars gave excellent performances. GMK actually elicited an emotional response from me by making Godzilla so evil that I just couldn't wait for the "OH GODZILLA! WHAT TERRIBLE LANGUAGE!" to get wasted by King Ghidorah or the military. I absolutely hated Godzilla after viewing GMK. That was Kaneko's intent, I'm sure, and at least for me he accomplished it.
