Agreed. You can't give a giant monster dialogue (in general) or really get into their heads for motivation, so you have to design them in ways that elicit a response from the audience. Destroyah looks like a crab-devil monster so obviously he's evil! In actuality he doesn't do anything special at all, just as you said. Battra could have easily had the fight against Jr., only to later pick him up and drop him. In fact Battra's motivations were actually more fleshed out than Destroyah so I could actually see that scenario being more plausible.
I think the same could be said of Space Godzilla...I don't know how he became known as this malicious trickster or super villain, but his motivations in Gvs.SG are not explained one bit yet somehow he's become a fan favorite. I blame the video games which gave him more personality than anything on screen, which was reinforced in IDW's comics.
