Good question! When Emmerich or Devlin (not sure who it was) was asked why Godzilla did not destroy half the city in Godzilla 1998, the answer was "we already did this in Independence Day and we did not want to repeat ourselves". (That was what they were concerned with! :shock:)

Also, both of them openly said that they did not like most of the Japanese Godzilla movies and that Godzilla would need to be changed and redefined completely for the upcoming generations of viewers. (Of course, by the self-proclaimed and highly qualified Godzilla experts Emmerich and Devlin. :goofy:)

It is this utter lack of respect for Godzilla (his creators, his history, his uniqueness, his loyal fans), seeing him being treated as "something" which can be tampered with at will, which makes this movie totally unacceptable for me. The ultimate goal of Godzilla 1998, made by people who did not understand and cared for Godzilla at all, was to crush the established image of the King of the Monsters and to replace it with "something" that was merely a huge creature designed to please mainstream audiences. This is why they changed everything ... and why this movie is a complete failure.

@ebirahsmeg1:

Wenn ich Emmerich wäre, würde ich das G-Fest lieber nicht besuchen. Ich glaube, da gibt es viele Leute, die nicht gut auf ihn zu sprechen sind.

@kent:

> OMG that is so ridiculous it is hilarious! [...]
> What ridiculous nonsense!

The following quotes are taken from Steve Ryfle's JAPAN'S FAVORITE MONSTAR:

Emmerich telling what he felt after the original script for
the Godzilla movie was turned down and they had the
freedom to write their own: All of a sudden it was
like SOMETHING WE ORIGINATED, and we had fun doing
it.

Emerich about his respect for the original Japanese Godzilla
movies and Godzilla fans: It's just the same movie over
and over again. [...] FOR REASONS I CAN'T EXPLAIN myself,
kids all over the world kept watching these movies.

Emmerich about the meaning of the new Godzilla: I didn't
want to make the ORIGINAL Godzilla, I wanted NOTHING
to do with it, I wanted to make MY OWN.

Devlin about the meaning of the new Godzilla: We wanted
to [...] REINVENT it, so that when you think of Godzilla, THIS
is the Godzilla you will think of for the next generation.

Ryfle about Devlin and Emmerich: Over time, Emmerich and
Devlin's reasons for demanding creative freedom became
clear: They never professed to being huge fans of Toho's
Godzilla series; in fact, they showed a certain disdain for it
[...] Emmerich and Devlin underestimated the power of
Godzilla's 40-year history and felt they could wipe it from
the slate [...]

I still remember the horror of the G98 version and the damaged that it did to the North American Godzilla fanbase and merchendise base and the fact that its taken a long time to recover. All involved in the project should be ashamed of themselves for this travesty to what you could say is one of the grandest movie legacies of the world and definitely one of the greatest gifts that the Japanese entertainment industry has given to us Americans. Hopefully the GINO will get murdered permanently by Godzilla himself and rosted to a crisp due to Godzilla's atomic breath.

But yeah, shouldn't we be getting back on the main topic, though talk about how bad G98 is always is a good thing to get out of your system now and again.
