Despite all the nuclear stuff running throughout the movie it's kinda weird to me that the thing that revives/awakens Godzilla initially is purely natural: a volcanic eruption. I can't help but feel that it would have been stronger thematically if a nuclear accident was the inciting incident. As is, it's more like Godzilla breaking out of the iceberg in KKvG.

Still digging the fact that I have access to this film now. I'm rewatching it yet again in oh so many months.

Been listening to Reijiro Koroku's score recently. So moody, really digging it. Hadn't given too much thought to it before, even though certain cues are burned into my brain via constant Godzilla 1985 rewatches as a kid.

With the exception of a few moments, its not a score that calls much attention to itself while watching, but it is definitely one I like to keep on hand in the car; I've come to appreciate it a lot as driving music.

A got a copy of the soundtrack from a friend and I'm sure there's more than that, like the music during the russian sub segment. I was just wondering if anyone already had a list of the tracks used.

Hey guys. Got a question on this. On the '16 disc release, is it just me or did Godzilla's roars have almost no variation? Like, barely any at all? I'm asking to see if i got a weird copy or they're all like that or what the hell ever.

Yeah, i don't have any at the moment to compare to. What i DO have is the Americanized VHS tape from New World and it makes the Big Guy sound real cool in various places. That newer disc just gives us some basic roars. Godzilla still sounds good mind you. But actually shows some emotive roaring in the American production.

^ G2K, too. The sound effects in the original Japanese version are weak compared to the meaty ones created for Sony's cut.

This picture doesn't exactly fit with the Showa films or the Heisei ones. It just feels different and despite its flaws I enjoy it. I wish there were Godzilla films like this one.

Biollante is so late '80s it's got that '80s/'90s vibe. Supermonster is hardly a movie. Legend of the Dinosaurs is more Jaws knockoff than kaiju film.

RoG just absorbs a decade and a half worth of atmosphere in one kaiju film.

So today it was announced that spfx master Teruyoshi Nakano passed today. I plan on remembering his life tonight by watching what I believe to be his magnum opus, Godzilla 85! On VHS of course as I remembered it as a kid

Yeah, I’ll be watching The Return of Godzilla this weekend in tribute to Nakano.

It’s great how he got to direct the special effects for Godzilla one last time with this flick and he finally had a big budget to work with. The cybot may not have been the most cost-effective investment but it’s a key part of this movie’s iconic look, no doubt.
