This is the first I've heard of a possible primetime network premiere for KING KONG VS GODZILLA. The first time I saw the movie was around 1973; my dad woke me up one night so I could watch it on the "Late, Late Show" (he was a great father). William, if you ever find that TV GUIDE ad I'd love to see it.
I did catch the NBC MEGALON broadcast, and also the well-publicized TV premiere of GODZILLA 1985 (which was syndicated by New World Television to local stations), complete with Dr Pepper commercials. Since then all the Godzilla films have had TV premieres on the SciFi Channel or pay cable.
For what it's worth, Sony's GODZILLA also had its network premiere on NBC.

[quote="Gwangi"]Here in Southern California in the 1970s, I do remember one time our local ABC station did played "King Kong vs. Godzilla" in prime time, after a Monday Night Football game. (I'm assuming that, but I do recall it was in December). However, it was not the network doing this. It was our local station KABC showing the movies which they showed many. So I guess that would not count.
I remember seeing alot of kaiju films on KABC- on their "3:30" movie. They used to do themed weeks, where they showed godzilla movies all week- that was cool.

I'm not an expert on ANY of this...so I'm probably wrong, but wasn't the primetime "premiere" of Megalon the REAL premiere of the movie in the U.S.? Meaning...it didn't get a theatrical run and was first seen on the TV premiere? That's what I always thought happened. Whereas GvsKK did have a theatrical premiere, it's "premiere" on television was just that...it's television premiere during prime time hours like most blockbuster films.
did anything I just typed make sense??? lol
