Godzilla '54 viewed at Full Screen?
Posted: Thu Oct 21, 2004 1:28 pm"Cinemascope" was one of many "widescreen" processes touted in the 1950s to lure people away from their television sets and into movie theater seats. "Tohoscope" was a version of Cinemascope that Toho first used in 1957 on THE MYSTERIANS (if I am not mistaken). In any case, THE MYSTERIANS was the first Japanese Fantasy Film shot in the widescreen process (Toho's release of GKOTM was the first widescreen film that they released -- because they cropped the film to make it appear to be a "cinemascope" picture) -- the original GODZILLA was shot in Academy Ratio, not in any widescreen process.
Musukogoji, WARNING FROM SPACE was shot in Academy Ratio, not widescreen, and was released the same, but it was the first Japanese Fantasy Film to be shot in color in 1956 -- beating Toho's MADAME WHITESNAKE to the screen by 5 months (and beating RODAN by 11 months).
